Black Screen fix methods so far, thanks for all of hard working guys!
This thread is gathering all confirmed working for some specific case of Nioh's black screen bug. Check this out if you have any of this issues:

  • You launch the game but the game windows show nothing, totally black blank screen inside no matter what resolution of windows mode you have
  • You launch the game, a little yellow flame showing on then vanish, you able to see splash screen of Koei Tecmo logo then after that is totally black blank screen inside no matter what resolution of windows mode you have
  • You launch the game but the game is crash right after the splash screen of Koei Tecmo
  • Whenever you set resolution to 1080p, the game just crash when pass Koei Tecmo screen.
Before continues the fixes, note down your pc status, do you have kind of:
  • K-lite codec pack or any third party codec?
  • Open "Run" windows check winver, is your windows is 10 N version?
  • Is your GPU is support by Threadriper?
  • Windows 7?
  • Your Windows Media Player can run wmv files in current status? (you can test it by using movie clip in Nioh folder)
  • Are you Nvidia or AMD user?
  • Is your windows in clean fresh conditions?
  • Are you sure your windows has applied lastest update?
  • Do you have dual GPU and the second one is Intel HD? Can you pass the black screen by Intel GPU?
  • Do you have any gamepad/joystick/virtual gamepad/virtual joystick driver left in Device Manager? Is your gamepad is high quality geniun?

There is many situations cause this black screen issue due they happen all the same so I asking you guys checking your current status of your pc carefully before we process, some method not working to the other and return. Every fix we have here is all of the hard working by our fellow gamers not from Devs so they are temporaly and help the Devs team find the fix more quickly. For meanwhile there is many gamers may still not able to play after apply all of the fixes like me, but we still working on it and make sure everybody could play our so much loving game: Nioh.
We are still working on this thread to help each other get pass the Black Screen: http://steamcommunity.com/app/485510/discussions/0/1479857071272105422/
You can find more detaileds, more research to continues your research then help each other find the wait get pass this annoying bug.

we finally find the link to fix both of windows 10 editions, sadly it not apply to windows 10 standard editions

download this, https://www.codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_standard.htm and when you install it, it should give you the option to remove the currently installed codecs, uninstall them, worked for me

Notice: for those have strong Intel GPU

That just my theory. I cant run Nioh on Intel GPU anyway, so I gonna find the way to fix this
It could be. Last night, I tried to play using the Intel on power saving and cleares the first mission. On the next map I got 23-30 fps. It's "playable" but not ideal, since I want to play with more fps and using the Power that my laptop can deliver. I'm gonna try to modify the options for wmp and see what happens

Visual C++ Runtime Installer All In One
LAV Filters Megamix 3 November

LAV filters install i picked Potplayer and made it as system default. I didn't tweak or edited anything else in the player it self nor the filters.

For testing purposes i did complete clean reinstall on my pc with latest Windows 10 Pro Build 16299. All drivers updated with Nvidia 1070 / Intel i7 7700k / 16 GB of DDR4 and FullHD display running 60fps setting in game. All working fine without issues and i launched game everytime via the settings launcher.

Hope this helps. =3

Edit: Also when i play the game it shows LAV Splitter running in my system tray.

♥♥♥♥ YES! It worked!
At the moment, something messed with the AMD driver and I can't open AMD settings, but the game is playing smootly, even in the first level that most of people are having low fps!

I believe my case was the same of Who, here's what i did to work:
Uninstalled the K-lite
Installed the K-lite 13.6 standard
Installed the 13.6.5 update
Voila!

Now I'll try to fix the AMD driver, it could be windows update that messed it.

Many thanks, man!

IM IN!!!!!!! :praisesun::praisesun::praisesun::praisesun::praisesun::praisesun::praisesun::praisesun::praisesun::praisesun::praisesun::praisesun:Here are my steps (I will tweak after I play a bit:praisesun:)
  • Uninstall Audacity (may or may not be necessary)
  • Uninstall Klite
  • Restart Computer
  • Disabled Firewall - not necessary
  • Install Klite only changing the default video and audio player to windows media player leaving everything else alone
  • Go in to default apps - Set Windows media player as both video AND music player - scroll down and click set defaults by app - scroll down to windows media player and click "set this program as default"
  • Run Game Launcher
  • Launch Game
  • Open task manager and find nioh.exe - right click it and click "go to details"
  • In the details tab of task manager Right click on nioh.exe - click set affinity - only have cpu cores that are all the same node selected - click ok
    - EDIT This is a Threadripper only fix. These processors actually have 2 seperate processors on the same chip and KT games (wmv) cant handle this properly. Basically anyone using a threadripper needs to disable half their processor on nioh.exe
  • Disable avast ENTIRELY! avast was hitting the hard disk usage HARD during the flame screen+KT logo - can confirm unnecessary

Sadly I think my issue is not exactly like your issue Who or OP's for that matter. It might be worth trying the "dual core fix" and the affinity set and just have two of your cores selected but it's a long shot since your wmv's work and mine didn't. -EDIT- Now that I've thought about it and understand the issue that was happening to me this likely won't work for anyone without a threadripper.

I WOULD like to know if you put your brothers version on your computer if it starts to work. Leave it to Devs to shoot themselves in the foot. . .

Time for some sleep for me :steambored::yawning_creep::praisesun::abs_zzz::sleep:

So far there are methode are confirmed working for some various case, try each of them to see if they fix your or not.
After the fix please let us know your pc current status and which method work for you, they would help every one who don’t have the fix yet.
Any further research and ideal are welcome for the game meant to be for everyone to play.

UPDATE: (11/12/17)
ok people
I think I have a conclusion and for pretty long time on researching and huge thanks to SaySomething, I can finally come to a conclusion.
As far we know, Nioh using Windows Media Player to run it's clip with WMV extension. That why everybody on windows 7 or windows 10 N have to apply specific update to have windows media player to pass the black screen.
That go to another trouble:
That is our GPU
Take my GPU as example: Radeon HD 8600M
By read the DxDiag log I find out that: My Radeon HD 8600M does not support video decoding
When Nioh running on my AMD, it take windows media player running on AMD as well, windows media can not find the codec on my AMD graphics card then unable to run the clip, cause the black screen after that.
I did try to install K-lite codec, LAV codec, but for every attemp to make WMP run on the third party codec are failure, for every time running WMV files, WMP refuse to use K-lite or LAV codec and try to run with codec provide by GPU, which it my AMD GPU doesn't support.
So I have to sadly announce that any body have GPU that unsport Video Decoding will not able to play Nioh unless the Developers decide to change the way to play those video clip.
For more easier checking, I found a software to help you guys check your GPU if it support video decoding or not by this link below.
http://bluesky23.yukishigure.com/en/DXVAChecker.html
So far until
  • We found the way force Windows Media Player use LAV or sort to run WMV
  • We found the way force Nioh using another player than WMP
  • The Developer team decided to change the way to play those video clip
Those people with unsupported GPU will not able to play.
I will keep find the way to solve this puzzle, for fair and for the game suppose to be for every one: Nioh.

Yeah, your heard about my brother, his GPU is AMD Radeon HD 7600M Series 1Gb, now as legacy GPU but it's support Video Decoding, so that is.

Update finale:
The devs already patch the game so if your gpu not support the required decoder the game wont load the clip then move on the game. So if you want to enjoy the game fully you need better gpu or at least support DXVA decoder. Thanks for all the hard works and also thanks the developers also put in simple method and save us all.

what kind issue do you have? is your harddisk really out of space?
xMatakiex Nov 10, 2017 @ 1:17am
everytime I launch after I set the brightness of the game and get past the "are you sure" screens it tells me there isnt enough hard disk space, and then goes back to the brightness setting. I've got 254gb free on the drive that Nioh is installed on and 263gb free on the drive that my documents is (where Nioh would be saving user settings).

maybe you did not run the game as admin, the game unable to reach restricted My Document folder, let try to run it as admin and feed back to us

Have tried that, same issue. Have tried changing settings in the launcher from highest to lowest to see if maybe that would help, still nothing. Have also tried restarting multiple times. nothing.

This is on initial launch of the game, I get a splash screen and then it makes me set my default settings, and my doucuments is on my G: Drive...my file structure is kinda...complicated lol.

For all intents and purposes its on my C: dive, G: is where my OS is
