Yeah, but Age of Empires has :
- limited ressources, which means moving to get more ressources,
- extremely limited population, which means micromanagement,
Compared to Age of Empires' "woo I has 3 soldiers I is awesome well time to build more houses", I really enjoy Cossacks' "that cute, I have 100 soldiers, and I'm still counting".
Just did. It's damn beautiful, but the lack of tutorial makes it a bit confusing.
Except that units are basically squads, it's a bit similar, yeah. There are several ages, each with its own ressources. In the present, for exemple, there's petrol.
There's also Rise of Legends, which has some nice features, as well as an original setting.
Other than that, it's difficult to say and depends on what you mean with "Cossacks-like". I'm assuming you mean RTS games with a focus on economy and that have a large scale.
There sadly aren't many like that, and all I can think of have a futuristic scenario:
Total Annihilation/Supreme Commander, AI War: Fleet Command and Warzone 2100. The last one is free, so there's no harm in trying it out yourselve right away. It has a large focus on research and artillery, but pretty much no economy (you just capture oil-deposits and build a rig on them, also you must have a powerplant for all 4 rigs you have. That's it.) I really like it though.
I shoulda explained, I meant a focus on economy, yeah, but if possible, with 2D sprites rather than 3D.
And American Conquest, I got it, the AI is pretty tricky. On very easy, it knows it should rush the peasants to capture them.
And the mechanisms aren't that simple too, because apparently muskets units can one-shot, but often misses.
Glad to see there are people who prefer 2D sprites over 3D :)
I generally love 2D isometric games and I have a small collection of 2D games and trying to collect as many as I can.
IMO American Conquest & Cossacks series are one of the greatest RTS games ever made to this date with well made 2D graphics and I love the way theyve created unique architecture for every nation, it is just amazing, you wont find this kind of detail in many many games.

AI is pretty great too (At least for me) you could still have incredible fun playing solo with AI.
Thinking of other similar games... I have played and liked the game called "Alexander" which is made by GSC and is similar to Cossacks except its based on Alexander the Great and Hellenistic period and theres another game called "The Entente" which is WWI rts but has similar features and its a lot fun if you ask me, but sadly theyre not available on Steam and I remember I tried to play The Entente 2 years ago and had problems running on Win7 even with patches, Im also not sure if theres a newer version out there which is compatible with newer OS's.
Theres also another game called "America: No Peace Beyond the Line" which is 2D and fun to play but heck theyre NOT ON STEAM and hard to find *sigh*
I didnt know "Heroes of Annihilated Empire" was available on Steam, I have added to my wishlist.
There are more games but I dont remember right now, maybe you should check Stronghold if you havent already.
Ha, this one I have. Pretty boring. The AI, even in easier difficulty, will put the pression on you very quickly, which means if you're not spamming a lot of units, it'll zerg rush you.
I never finished a skirmish with another race than the undead.
And Stronghold is, well, the reason I still like isometrics RTS. I mean, I really like the serie (rushing the enemy castle with an army of werewolves/assassins/polar bear never gets old), but in the 3D games (Stronghold 2 and Stronghold legend), the units tend to clips into each other, walking through water, making bridges useless, and weird pathfinding. I still remember that time I had 5 catapults on top of each others, looking like one catapults throwing fives stones at once.
Not to mention sprites allows a lot of details without taking too much RAM.
There are few 3D rts I like, for example "The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth 1 & 2" and yeah its not available on Steam how nice...
I've been looking for cossacks-like games ever since, but there really isn't much out there like it. It seems that the Starcraft/Warcraft and AoE type of RTS games have always been rather dominant. There also are the late nineties C&C style games (C&C Red Alert and Red Alert 2 obviously, but also stuff like KKND) which I really like, but they really aren't anything like Cossacks. Other then that I can only think of all the tactical games like Close Combat, Blitzkrieg, Sudden Strike etc, but that isn't what you're looking for either (by definintion).
Battle for Middle-Earth is nothing like Cossacks, especially the first one with it's rather limited base builidng (you get about 6 or 8 building slots or so per Base and get to choose from about the same amount of buildings, and bases themselves can only be build on predefined spots on the map). It also has a large focus on heroes and special abilities, a squad system and a unit cap. The second one at least revamps the bases so you can actually build freely (well, inside a certain radius around your castle). I had quite some fun with them though, but they're not comparing well to Cossacks.
