The game does break down at extremes. Mods?
I wonder if there are unofficial mods.

You are limited to 300 buildings, but that can be solved somewhat with colonies, which IIRC give +40 limit per. But you are limited to 5 colonies.

To solve the issue of ore depletion, the exploration vehicles are helpful, and then the colonies can send resources via custom trade routes. But combined with the standard trade ones, you can only have 22 trade routes total, so you can't import even 3 colonies' worth with that.

The game does start to significantly lag when placing roads the more buildings and roads you have (I guess it just wasn't optimized for large cities).

I suppose, however, that at a certain point, more nanite production becomes just superfluous as you only need it for producing consume goods and maintaining structures, which is a relatively slow burn.

I am on Mission 4 currently. I am trying to max out every statistic other than population (food amount/quality/variety, goods, health, water, air quality, etc.), and so far, with only half the map, I have nearly been able to do so.

I can probably fill the entire map if I am smart about what buildings I place, although I won't be able to convert most of my tunnels to decorations.

Just won re-election with 100% of the vote. Is it rigged? Maybe, but no one's complaining...

Originally the game wasn't intended, but a few of us worked with the dev to improve optimisation to what we have now. Alas the game isn't being developed any longer.

I have quite an extensive play through list on my YouTube channel if you want a gander...

(So you're saying it was already somewhat optimized, or there are secret optimizations somewhere?)

P.S.: I did find the option to disable building limits. Nice!

Console has a limit of 300 since we need to be able to guarantee reasonable (30+ fps) frame rates.

On the PC, we initially had a policy of "we'll let players build colonies as big as they want, and it's up to them to manage the colony size <--> hardware capabilities <--> graphics settings trade-offs."

Unfortunately, not everyone understands or accepts these trade-offs, and this led to a certain small minority of users with below-minimum PC specs building massive colonies at 8x game speed with the graphics settings turned up to the max and being surprised that it didn't run at a consistent 60 fps.

So we eventually added a SOFT limit of 300 buildings + 40 per remote settlement (= max 500) on PC ... AND we also added a check box to the options so that players with powerful PCs and high-end graphics hardware can disable this limit and build colonies as big as they like.

In general, Aven Colony will play quite smoothly on most modern hardware, and we really want to avoid forcing anyone to accept limitations when their hardware can handle it (or if they're willing to accept lower frame rates on a less-powerful PC).

But given that many players ignore the Minimum & Recommended specifications posted on our Store page (including many trying to run it on a Surface Pro), we ultimately found that it was essential to at least put this in place as a soft limit to give a simple warning to remind players that:

1. You don't need to build super massive colonies to win the game; and
2. There's a 3-way trade-off between colony size, frame rate, and PC performance.

I'll add in about 18 months have now passed by. I didn't have lag playing on a nice computer with building limits removed.

I am actually using a 1080 and I do get lag, even well within the limits, sometimes. But I probably need to reduce my quality settings a little.

There is still the question of trade deal limits. It's somewhat of a bug.. won't let me add new ones SOMETIMES, but sometimes will.

I'm not playing this game currently. I just wanted you to see what the developer posted. I'm not running a 4K monitor just a HD monitor with a GTX1070 and a SSD. You didn't say if you have a GTX or RTX. RTX has problems with some games. I don't know about for this game. I remember trading but not the specifics on it anymore. I think they can only trade one item at a time per ship dock or whatever they called it. You may have to wait for them to return from space before setting a new trade item. I'm sorry I can't help anymore on it. I know this forum gets little input from players, so checked it out for what help I could still give.
