How is food quality calculated?
Hey All,

I am trying to understand how food quality is calculated. Can anyone tell me, I am currently on Eden Crater and growing Groji and Entari and i notice that food quality is Awful. I understand i can use Bar and Bistro building but was curious how this is all calculated. I thought processed foods from the mill would be considered better than raw so making something like entari oatmeal and groji beans would give a decent quality but clearly not?

I do enjoy the game but would prefer some more complex production chains like anno (i know this isn't anno but liked how you would make one thing that gets turned into another etc).

Thanks,

Seph

Oh I can help you with that! This is actually an issue on maps where you can grow old earth food too.

Processed alien food in general tastes nasty, so you're gonna need bars & grills in "bistro mode" to bring up quality of food. (If you use your imagination, basically the cooks there will flavor the food with spices and stuff that will make it taste better). I'd recommend one for each habitat/skyscraper you build. Having a hospital for each living area is also helpful too, because the doctors can give...I guess...vitamin and medical injections to make up for the nutrients that the colonists aren't getting. (I'm partially using my imagination here). Not sure if just a bar & grill by itself (where they just sell drinks) will help in the food dept, but the colonists like their booze too.

Trading with other colonies for old earth food helps too. They want several things that Eden Crater can provide, and your colonists are most grateful for old earth food supplements. You won't get as big a supply of earth food this way, but every bit helps.

Thanks for the reply, it does somewhat in that alien stuff is apparently nasty but was curious if each food has a quality rating and its a weighted average of their diet that makes up the overall AWFUL im getting. Im surprised the game doesnt say at least in some way give a quality rating of each food so you can plan these things.

Thanks,

Seph

I'm not sure if the following is accurate.

Alien food grows faster than old Earth food (baseline growth 140% vs 100% according to the overlay) but tastes worse? So basically alien food to old Earth food is quantity vs quality?

I can't tell you exactly how it's calculated, but the game does give some hints. Other than the general Earth foods > alien foods, some foods are described as delicious (corn, xeno spice bread), and some are described as disgusting (Quori products). And processed > unprocessed.

Here what i have noticed:
* If ration consists of 5 alien based meals, the food quality is Awful
* If ration consists of 5 old Eearth crops (unprocessed), the food quality is Moderate
* If ration consists of 5 old Eearth crop based meals (processed), the food quality is Moderate (yes, mills suck outside of Eden Creater)
* 1 Bistro Bar increases food quality from Awful to Moderate and from Moderate to Excellent in surrounding area, even at LOW efficiency.
* 2 Bistro Bars increase food quality from Awful to Good in surrounding area.
* Low amount of Old Earth food from cargo containers and flour income from Trading Hub help keeping high food quality and variaty for a very long time.

The blip! lol
Well, for completeness (as there aren't many guides and this area could get searched for info) i am joining in Necromancy here:

The exact food quality of each food type can be seen in the "Population and Morale"-Menu under the "Food Consumption"-register on the right side.
Candy and Soda, for example, have a rating of 68, Corn of 100 and Bread of 120.
But the Xeno-Food is overall worse than the food from Earth.
