I have owned every version of RPG Maker ever made but there were always limitations to a 2D environment that made me impossible to be fully satisfied with my projects.
I now have over 700 hours in SGB and have bought every 3D DLC both from steam and 3rd party vendors. I do not regret it at all! I started with the trial/demo version for a couple weeks and then upgraded to the full version without hesitation. SGB is growing and will continue to grow!
So check out the demo and make the choice for yourself
I suggest looking in the "Post Your Games" forum here to get started. There are other games besides these though you just have to look around for them. Occult RERaise on steam is one that I found, and there are a lot in Japanese including some that look amazing!
SGB also comes with a sample game with project file and there other sample project files around for you to examine. CompanionWulf (who answered you first) also just put up a small sample Halloween game recently as well.
It does get updated once every few months with some new things, which is nice. And it does allow some thing RPG Maker can't do due to its 3D focus, but it isn't quite as versatile as RPG Maker yet. However, if you are okay with working within limitations there is stuff you can do by being a bit creative with it.
It boils down to the type of game you wish to create. If you are looking to make a 2D game than go with RPG Maker as it is designed for that. If you want a 3D game Smile Game builder is a great engine for making one.
I posted Mystery Demo under the 'Share Your Games' section. In July I brought this software and figured the best way to learn is to use it. I made that in 24 hours without knowing how anything worked. While not a complete showcase of what I was able to do in 24 hours without any knowledge.
Note: @Mike you necored from over a year ago.
