What does the skull do?

I found a skull in one of the rooms in the upper levels in flight deck where there is a landing pad littered with bodies and a parked ship with a cyborg taking pot shots at me from above. There didn't seem to be any conventional way to reach that area and had to use my turbo boots to get on top of the ship and then launch off from there to reach it, which suggests that its likely a hidden area. Interacting with the skull lights it up but I don't know what it did? Are there more in different levels?

There's skulls all over the place. Unless there's some sort of easter egg with them no one's found, they don't really do anything except be skulls.

Wow, I wasn't expecting an answer so soon. I was going to modify the post to add another question but thanks for the instant response. Wait so I did all this just for some bragging rights?? Dammit, I really miss the days where secret areas would net you some cool weapons to use instead of just BS achievement score.

There is another locked door just adjacent to this skull room that I have not figured out how to unlock. Any hints? Besides getting access to the life pods I have largely scoured the place clean, even managed to reduce security level to 0% by finding this cheap secret hidden area with the last camera (lucky accident) but I have not seen any buttons related to unlocking it.

There are the common white human skulls you can pick up, and then there are the Skullys hidden one per each level that one can activate and get an achievement for finding all of them.

There are also plenty of doors in the game that cannot be opened and that lead to nowhere in the level geometry.
