This is a tough fight, but it's not impossible.
First up, if you're feeling frustrated, take a break. Come back to it with a clear head and you'll have more success.
Secondly, some tactics...
- Make sure you have medkits and batteries in the hotbar
- Make sure your weapons are all loaded with appropriate ammunition
- Activate your Energy Shield, Rocketboots, Target Identifier
- Make sure Sensearound, the headlamp and envrioshield are off
- Just before the fight, make sure you're healthy, load up on Reflex (slows time), Staminup (for the bonus health)
- Railgun
- Magpulse (always double-charge)
- Grenade Launcher (loaded with EMP)*
- Magnum
- Assault Rifle (AP rounds)
*If you don't have the grenade launcher (or want to use it for frags), thrown EMP grenades work fine and you can also stunlock Diego with thrown ones
- Shotgun and Skorp require you to close in, and Diego has quite powerful melee and a short-range teleport. That being said, when loaded with appropriate ammo (flechette and teflon respectively), they can deal a lot of damage (especially if Deigo has been stunned with an EMP)
- Energy weapons such as the Sparkbeam, Ion Beam and Plasma Rifle can deal excellent damage to Deigo and his shield, but with added strain on your energy system, which you need for your own shields and rocketboots
- The minipistol is actually not too bad when loaded with teflon, if for some reason you don't have the AR or Skorp
- When the fight starts, you can use the animation window to activate your Target Identifier
- Once you regain control, Lob an EMP grenade into him. This will drain his energy and stun him for around 5 seconds
- Unload a rail slug into into him while his shield is down (if you have the railgun). You can use the Target Identifier to identify weakpoints and get critical hits
- Switch to a high DPS weapon to get some more free damage in
- When Diego has energy, his shields are up but he can also use his plasma rifle
- The plasma rifle is hard to dodge, but level geometry can block it
- Hence taking down his shield/energy also prevents plasma rifle use
- Without energy, the only ranged weapon Diego can use is the missile barrage
- IMPORTANT: DIEGO CAN LEAD HIS SHOTS WITH THE MISSILE BARRAGE*
- If I remember correctly, the missiles can also destroy potential cover spots
- If Diego doesn't have line of sight, he might sometimes teleport and engage in melee
* What this means is that if you are already moving in some direction when he fires a volley of missiles, you're still likely to get hit if you continue in that direction. You must change direction in order to evade them. This is easiest to do if you begin from a standing position, and then move.
- Utilise the Target Identifier to identify weakpoints. It can also be used to identify the weapon Diego is about to use
- When on the offence, you need to take down the shield first in order to deal significant damage with most weapons
- The main exception is the Magpulse - its DOT effect pierces his shield, allowing you to deal significant damage even while it's up
- Powerful weapons like the Railgun can be used to take the shield down quickly or deal significant HP damage
- EMPs are your friend
- After unloading your big guns (railgun, magpulse etc.), ranged weapons with good armour piercing (AR, Magnum, Sparkbeam) etc will allow you to deal damage at range while dodging missile barrages
- Only move in to close range (Skorp, Shotgun etc.) after exhausting other options
Okay, so... You've just unloaded a ♥♥♥♥-tonne of lead and energy bolts in to him, but he's still kicking. And you have no weapons that are loaded.
This is the critical point - your defences are low, you've probably taken a few hits, you might be running low on energy. You will need to evade his attacks to buy yourself the time to refresh your resources.
- Use the level geometry to evade
- Make sure you're in cover when using time-consuming resources that inhibit your mobility (such as medkits).
- Take stock of your energy levels and use a battery as necessary. Your energy is keeping you alive.
- Use a reflex patch if reflex has finished
- Stay mobile when reloading if you don't have cover
- Make sure your smaller weapons are reloaded first, reload your biggun's last
Then lob another EMP grenade. Send another rail slug through his stupid cyborg skull. Rinse and repeat.
Once he's close to death, alter your strategy to prefer high DPS weapons with quick reload. Magnum is perfect for this.
And one last point: Make sure you still have something to fight with at the end. Heal up as soon as he's down.
Aaaaand if all else fails and you really can't beat it, there is a cheat menu. Drop by the Nightdive discord and I can give you the details
So, I look forward to being able to proceed onwards.
Hope you guys are still working on System Shock II? (That is probably one of my all time favourite games).
And I'll certainly drop by the Discord.
Thanks.
Glad to hear you got through it!
NightDive's working on an enhanced edition of system shock 2, but no remake has been announced.
I'm not associated with NightDive, more of a wanderer, helping out where I can...
