Secodnly even if it is on it offers some reduction likely around 75-80% so you still take the left over and that will deal dmg just less than without protection.
And V1 version does not protect againts some enviormental stuff V2 does.
Neither one will completely prevent damage. Just reduce the incoming damage.
If it's reducing your current hazard count down to ~30 or so, it's working fine.
V2 might be more energy efficient too but not sure about that.
V1 is needed optionally for one of the groves.
You can also use Turbo V2 to jump around and skip some of the grove and complete it faster.
It's only beta grove that is a real issue (although, the enviro shield will protect you against biological attacks as well).
It's particularly difficult to find a V2 enviro shield before Beta Grove (as countless logs inform you). Be prepared to do a Beta Grove run with just a V1. It's a wild ride.
It's pretty good. If only the dead crew could find a V2 as well, maybe this could all have been avoided!
Now V3 in the original that was more energy efficient and did have slightly better biohazard/rad resistance, was indeed a joke. As you didn't get it until Engineering lv.. By which point you really didn't need it anymore. Which is probably why they removed it in the remake.
Are there any points in the game more 'biohazardous' than Beta Grove?
I ask because, perhaps it does provide better protection, but just appears that it doesn't due to clamping at the same rate. You should be able to get the V2 just before ejecting the grove, has anyone tried going back there?
