Radiation shields purpose?

I'll be honest, I'm dumb... Does anyone know what the purpose of activating the radiation shields is for?

Are you talking about your personal shield or the stations shields?

If its the station its because you're about to blow the laser right off the station by deflecting it off the shields.

It's biohazard for a start, and you will need it in a grove.

This. The audio logs explicitely state so.

You need to turn on the Shield and switch the Safery Overide for the Laser ;)

Yeah, I am a veteran in games like this and I spent a long time confused until the logs showed a pattern. Generally your objective is related to something everybody references in a floor; on that floor a lot of people mention shields, the isotope, and the laser. After awhile it clicked and I went "Okay, I need to plug the thingy in the boo-bop to reticulate the splines."and sure enough that got me past that segment.

Sometimes I feel reminded of the days of yore, when Morrowind had just come out and everyone was asking "Where the hell is Caius Cosades?", because there is no quest marker and all you have to go by is a route description...
