What difficulty should I play?
Is the combat difficulty more fun or is it kind of just meatshields like in System Shock 2? I like more challenging gameplay in stuff like max-difficulty Ultrakill and CULTIC and was just asking folks before I bit down and started.

I've beat SS2 on the hardest difficulty easily after a first play through. I'm only on the second level right now and I feel like I have too many supplies and I should've bumped up the difficulty. I'm happy on normal difficulty, but if you're looking for a challenge definitely bump up the difficulty from 2 to 3 .

Enemies are quite a bit more challenging that in the original. And have more varied attacks. But they also do have a predictable attack pattern and a cooldown inbetween attacks. So one can deal with most of em by popping in and out of cover.
Main challenge will come with the fact that they can spawn a lot of enemies, atleast on max combat difficultly. Not played the lower difficulties, so cant comment how much less enemies will spawn. And SHODAN do love throwing a few surprises at you when you least expect it...
But if you like a challenge, then crank everything to max except mission difficulty, if going in blind for first time. Or just wanna explore all the new ♥♥♥♥ on first run. As there is no way to complete the game within a 10 hour limit on a first blind run without looking at guides.

2 Combat, 2 Mission, 3 Puzzles and 3 Cyberspace.

I really don't like timed missions, and 2 for combat seems pretty balanced, enemies are challenging but not bullet sponges.

Mission 3 is a timed challenge that is meant for a second playthrough, so don't choose that.

Combat is best described as Resident Evil like. It is mostly about resources and tactics rather than action. Don't go in expecting a boomer shooter. Put it to 3 if you like a challenge.

Puzzles get pretty hard on 3. Only put it on 3 if you like puzzles. Otherwise stick to 2 (or 1 if you hate puzzles).

Cyberspace is like a basic 3d arcade game. Put it to 3 if you like that sort of thing. If 'basic 3d arcade game' sounds like a waste of time for you then put it on 2 or 1.

1 for combat

Honestly once you reach the research deck the game is way too hard on 2, but too easy on 1.

can i change difficulty? I already started at all 3 and didn't knew about that timed stuff lol

I did 2-2-2-2 across the board and it's darn tough, next time I do a playthrough I will make the combat easier and cyberspace easier as well (ridiculous difficulty in some cyberjacks), so I can soak in the station exploration more without being blown away by a surprise robot behind the door without quick saving again.

Combat on 3

The game isn't hard at all and I'm swimming in ammo and heal packs. Literally all you have to do is explore.

Just try for yourself. If you feel under- or overchallenged with a gameplay part, start a new game with a different setting.

I chose Mission 2, Combat 2, Cyber 2 and Puzzle 1 because i hate those puzzles and want to have a good time :)

i recommend combat 3 mission 2 cyber 1 (cause boring and pointless) and puzzle 3 for first playthrough

so in short all 3 but mission and cyberspace.
sadly i put cyberspace on 3 and i never see forward todo them.
i'm almost finished on all 2 and it has been hard but a lot of fun.

I actually liked the cyberspace, it's simple yes, it's a poor man's descent, but I thought it was fun, well worth putting a 3 difficult so you can enjoy it more.

put it on 1 and replay it if you like it
