I think Prey 2017 is better
I just beat System Shock

I enjoyed the game, I love the series, I love this genre.

But I think Prey 2017 overall is a better game though with exception to SystemShock Remake having a better atmosphere with Shodan, mutants and cyborgs roaming around.

I think the game design of the original held the developers back, I'd love to see them tackle a System Shock 3 if that ever leaves development hell. I mean this game escaped it so I guess anything is possible.

i like SSR a lot more then prey.

1. they stole the name for the game from another fps
2. they stole a lot of game mechanics from system shock
3. enemy variety in prey is laughable - fight black goo - wow, how nice
4. ending isn't worth the hassle - will not get a sequel, so who cares rly about the "big" reveal
5. arcane studios doing the best they can making you jump through a lot of hoops to get the game running at high refresh rates and without stutter

to be fair: SSR stutters too, so there you go.

Accusing them of stealing is kind of ridiculous, System Shock started a genre but also borrowed heavily from a lot of games of the time as well. Not going to flip out at them for stealing the first person perspective from Wolfenstein 3D lol

I liked the ending, it was a million times better than what we got in the remake.

Devs weren't held back. They made a conscious choice to be as faithful as possible to a game that is almost 30 years old. They mostly succeeded.

It's an extremely faithful remake to a fault. They were held back in the sense that they needed for follow the template of a game from so long ago.

Seeing what they can do with modern sensibilities, a map they design from scratch and all that jazz would be interesting.

I think the first half of Prey was better but not the second half. Prey becomes far too easy in the second half due to the overabundance of Neuromods.

They didn't *need* to do anything that they didn't want to do. They did what they wanted to.

Then it's not System Shock 1 anymore. I think most people here are down for something new, but that's what future sequels are for.

Well then no? The remake "stole" the recycling mechanic from Prey then.

Prey also didn't have a rogue AI and the lore is not at all comparable.

System Shock feels more like a survival horror(/action horror) title like Resident Evil or Dead Space (remake) than it does an immersive sim, it has that maze like level design, it has a very rigid progression with red/blue/yellow keycards like specific keyitems in RE games (no alternative solutions to progress), it has puzzles, limited ones, but still relies on them a lot, and then inventory management and resource scarcity with tanky deadly enemies.
Sure it might not be "scary" like those games, but mechanically this feels more like I'm playing an RE game than Thief, Deus Ex, Prey etc.

TLDR, Apples to oranges with Prey =/= System Shock imo, even if System Shock was the grand daddy of immsims, it was before immsims were even properly a thing in how we talk about them today.

I thought Prey was 'decent'. Nothing more, nothing less. In some ways that's worse than making a terrible game, it's so unmemorable that I can remember nothing of it aside from the mimic premise, probably because that's literally the only interesting thing the game did.

Ironic, because the game wanted to be a mimic of System Shock... except it failed to do so, it was just another power fantasy shooter. If it leaned more toward the exploration and horror aspects, it could have succeeded. Instead it went went all in on the generic sci fi shooter end, as if the market needed another.

bruh it's always the same BS:

- the protagonist (you) gets thrown into a utopia which turns into a dystopia of sheer hubris from the ppl who created it.

- you get a way of upgrading yourself - mods, nanosomething, something, you name it.

- you get a nice arsenal of freaky innovative weapons

- different enemy types that you can study and kill

- you need to escape or destroy dystopia before it kills you and every other human being

- morality system was added in later games

since system shock that's the formula for every "shock" game. the details might vary but it's always the same what is connected to it. i just like the OG shock game the most.

Both games are great, and almost all of their shortcomings can be fixed with mods, but if we talk about vanilla versions, then the maximum difficulty and the timer in SS decided everything for me, this makes the gameplay super-adrenaline, Prey doesn't have this frenzied energy, it becomes very easy after a few hours of play, and then I just begin to fall asleep from my omnipotence over helpless enemies.
Vanilla SS is insanely exciting at maximum difficulty, while vanilla Prey is completely toothless and insanely boring because of this.

Prey has a nightmare difficulty + survival mode. It definitely has some bite to it. I didn't personally find SS difficult in the combat sense anyway, was more of the problem solving that was difficult. For the wrong reasons in a lot of cases.
