Where do i shut down the laser?

I'm a bit confused now. I have the code for the laser from the research level and typed it into the panel on reactor for the maintenance. But what now? Every door on maintenance is still locked. How do i open them actually? And how do i open the reactor? There is a shield with a switch in it but i don't understand how do i get into it, lol.

You're not supposed to be playing with the reactor.

Step 1: On research deck grab isotope X-22 and the code from the library
Step 2: On reactor deck plug in isotope X-22 and hit the switch to turn on the shield, then input the code to override the safety lock
Step 3: Go back to research, central control room, hit the button to fire the laser.

This is basically your lesson in System Shock 101, pay attention to any information given in audio logs, those will tell you what to do next. Don't feel bad about failing the first class though, I did too and had to go Googling around for what to do. I've been conditioned by 20 years of dumb-dumb games into not thinking.

yet you seemed to have missed the audio log in medical that explicitly states what it is you're supposed to be doing

i found the room where you need to do it and couldn find the button for 10 minutes because everything in this game is somehow a cacophony of color and grey simultaneously
