I'm rarely even using the laser rapier, considering dumping it.
An upgraded Sparq can take out even security bots without too much trouble, but mid-way to late game you start having a lot of power issues once you get the better implants.
Early on, I make do with a pair of Sparq Beams - both are set to overcharge, and I simply alternate between the two with my mouse wheel. This allows them to chill while maintaining a high rate of fire. So long as an energy pylon is nearby, I can mow down mutants with ease. You can also alternate between the stungun and a sparq, but I prefer pure damage.
Rapier is my earliest stop, heading directly onto LV3 and searching a ceiling passage that is behind the door to the left of the elevator. That thing is incredibly useful against nasty critters of all varieties. Probably doubles as a lantern in the remake, what with light physics and all that. However, you can't use it once you run dry - be sure to keep at least one kinetic weapon on hand and thoroughly stocked.
The rifle is easily found in Grove Alpha, LV6. I beeline for it immediately after resolving the laser issue. Basically the laser rapier, except it can reach out and give someone a very bad day. Don't use the overcharge option, though - setting the thing to maximum is good enough.
IIRC, you can stock your inventory with many red batteries before the point of no return. This means you can use standard batteries as needed until then, since there is only a limited number of batteries you can carry.
Oh, and, on long range, I used the Magnum to pick off enemies from a distance. Great weapon for that.
I dropped the Reaver with just two EMP grenades and a bunch of osmium rounds from my Magnum since I had so much.
Throwing is a bit weird though, they don't seem to roll very far and unpredictably, so that part isn't fun.
I like the EMP grenades because they stun most enemies, and the mines because I can just pitch them and then backup. But I haven't found much use for the gas grenades, and frag grenades I mostly use to blow up CPU nodes.
EMP grenades are extremely effective against bosses and some of the harder bots like Sec-2 bots. Using the grenade launcher makes them more efficient, as they will explode on impact instead.
