i finally finished modding system shock remake !
as a pc user, it is possible to tailor a videogame, to customize it to making it feel more funny to play.

it is NOT necessary to mod every game, but some games benefit from some little tweaks.

here is what i changed about the game, while i was playing it:

the first thing i remember is, having no idea about the junk items in the game, i ignored them, but later i found out that you can convert them in scraps, to obtain coins to gain ammo, drugs and weapon mod kits... so i tried to make the process less tedious.

all items now stack, so you have to use the vaporize action less times... you can collect all books then vaporize once.

scraps were stealing too much inventory slots, i made them stack to 300, 3 stacks now give 90 coins and you save 6 inventory slots !

i increasing the max stack size of all items, most of the times i doubled it (from 10 to 20) so they occupy half inventory slots, for the ammo i went to 20 times the unmodded magazine size: railgun is 1x, instead of 10x max stack, it is now 20x

i realized later in the game that you cannot carry all weapons with you like with heretic, quake2 or doom3 to i decided to add 24 extra inventory slots, enough to carry 3 extra weapons !

+12 extra starting slots, and +6 extra slot each time an inventory expander item is used

i also made a monster in research drop a third copy of inventory expander (only the first 2 copies have an effect, the third time you pick up the item nothing happens)

i wanted to start expanding the inventory early in the game, to make room in inventory for the new guns, also now you do not need to solve the chess puzzle to fully expand your inventory, and you can fully expand your inventory as soon as you hit storage deck

i realized that i could not jump on desks to pick up some items out of range, so i boosted the jumping and walking speed, it is now possible to feel agile while exploring the citadel station, i can casually jump on top of beds and desks to check if i missed an item and pick it up.

i felt that the 10 hour time limit (on hard) was too thin, so i doubled it and then created another version with a 24 hours limit, i felt it was nice to start the game with a timer ticking 23.59.59

i felt that respawning at half life was annoying, after all there were only 2 or 3 medical beds in the whole game, but plenty of energy stations with the ability to recharge energy to full... so now respawning heals to 100% on all difficulties

i wanted to loot more, instead of finding plenty of empty bodies, so i forced the game to at least gift 1 item, if the monster can drops items.

to balance it out i reduced the quantity of ammo that a monster can drop, now every monster drops a limited quantity of ammo, but it drops them often

i didn't like that human corpse could drop a sparq gun, once you have one of it you do not need more, and there are 4 of them in the medical deck !

now human corpse drops reflex aid patch instead of sparq gun

i also decided to make human mutant drop reflex aid patch instead of berserk, since i ended with too many berserk patches, and those are useful only while using melee weapons.

i decided to change stamina patch in order to make it give out more hitpoints as heal, it now gives half the hitpoints you would gain from using a medpatch, but you gain them instantly

i decided to double the duration of berserk effect, to make it similar with the duration of reflex effect, while also halvening the detox effect, since you cannot use other patches while detox effect is active.

i reduced the energy consumption of the cybernetic upgrade, they still contribute into draining energy, but at least now you can keep light on and radar on without running out of energy very soon.

i made the energy weapons more energy efficient in every weapon setting, i also took into consideration the effect of weapon modkits: you now are not penalized for choosing overcharge or for not choosing it, with overcharge you need to hide and waiting before being able to shoot again

it becomes convenient to move from sparq to ionrifle, the same way happening from pipe/wrench to laser rapier

the energy weapons can be discarded once the plasma rifle is found, toward the end of the game, saving inventory space and still keeping a weapon type that uses energy as ammo

the plasma rifle projectile speed in now slowed down, to avoid the crazy pinball effect that ends with a suicide and its damage is boosted greatly.

the railgun now can 1shot even very strong enemy, since waiting for reload is kinda painful... also it is now possible to 1shot the strongest enemies of the game as long as you score 1 headshot

gas grenade area of effect and damage is improved, to be able to dispatch even floating enemies

proximity mine damage is boosted, since that weapon is rare, it feels better to make each use of it really count: instead of 5 of them to kill a target now you only need 1 or 2 of them

i changed bullet damage for the scorpion gun, to mimic the same damage of the minipistol, after all they use the same bullet types

i also boosted damage of the shotgun to make it feel more like a shotgun, as it happens in other videogames

i boosted assault rifle damage, since its burst fire mode didn't pack enough punch and also made its ammo type drop more often

i boosted damage of the plasma rifle energy mode to almost double, now you can use it to kill monsters instead of just scratching them... killing 1 strong monster consumes about the same energy gained from a battery item.

i doubled damage of the cyberspace weapon, to remedy from the frustrating parts full of cyber mines, cyber space still feels challenging... but now monsters and mines pop in half the time

i gave a huge boost to the exclusive weapon used in the last level of the game, since the end fight was more boring than anything else... now at least it wastes less time

remote hacking was one of those feature pointless to use: a bullet is faster and cheaper.
so i reduced energy consumption and dramatically lowered hacking time... it is now a gimmick that saves the time to swap to an energy weapon or to the minipistol/scorpion weapon

i didn't like helmets being 2x2 items, while a skull is a 1x1 item... so helmets are now 1x1 item in inventory, before doing this change i placed 1 crewcap into the lifting storage, and i confirmed that the item spatially occupies only 1 slot.

the spotlight found on puzzles can be blinding, and make the puzzle solving phase annoying... so i reduced its brightness intensity.

+1 to mods done by people.

if someone want to have an easier or less punishing game they can use those mods.

If some one wants it to be harder there are mods too.

More vareity is always good.

If you do not like the mod you can simply not use it.

version 3.1 uploaded :-)

no intro skip
added: ammopacks give half ammo, since 100% at least one loot drop gives too many ammo
(extra inventory space lets you carry all weapon types)

boosted railgun again, since it wasn't strong enough... an headshot is still required to kill some monsters in one shot
boosted secondary plasmagun shot again, as an ultimate attack was not powerful enough... it now deals double damage 300 --> 600

human mutant drops staminup instead of berserk

There is already a good mod scene for SS:R. I just completed a 3/3/3/3 run with extra difficulty, and it was an absolute blast.

So, while I may not use the Nixos mod, I would definitely say "good job" and encourage modding.

The community shouldn't dump on someone modding a game. Even if you don't like the specific tweaks, the knowledge gained during the modding process is important. OP has shared videos on how to mod, and that's fantastic.

BigTinz, can you point me to one of these videos? There's one tiny thing I'd like to mod about the game and since no one has made a mod for it yet, I figure I'll just do it myself.
