Begginers tips (played some missions) -
I am still having some trouble understanding the game. I build up my city (I play continuous). I usually set it to large map, make one other faction that is able to expand, the rest just pirates and people with ARKs. I usually play as the Eco people.

I can't seem to find a step by step online guild for someone totally new to the ANNO series. Any tips? What am I missing (besides a lot lol)?

Big quick question, how do I repair the one ship I have that can fire back at pirates? How do I build more of them lol?

The campaign serves as tutorial. Not a good tutorial though.
For video guide, try NanoSuitNinja's videos. He has complete guide:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYFLhADYd3k

To repair ship, you need to build repair crane (Build mode - Eve tab). To make more ship, build a shipyard (2nd tier tab). The options are there if you reached 2nd tier house. The number of ship you can build depends on your city population.

You can either watch the video and series above (recommended) or you can play through the campaign as that is technically 1 big tutorial which teachs you how to play over the course of the missions.

The problem with NSN's video series is after watching it all I feel like I've played the game to 100% and never need to play it now.

Since you are new, I really can advice you start by playing the campaign, that will learn you a lot.
Also, try to read hose pesky little pop-ups from eve, they learn you a lot too.

About your wish for a guide, I won't write a complete guide for you but will give you a few pointers :

Building a city (most important)
When building a city your people will need certain "civilian building" types.
To be able to build level 1 people : city center (tech, eco, tycoon)
To be able to upgrade to level 2 people : concert hall (eco) Casino (tycoon)
To be able to upgrade to level 3 people : TV station (all 3 factions have their own version)
To be able to ubgrade to level 4 people : Financial Center (Tycoon) Congress Center (Eco)
Each of those buildings has a area of influence, you don't need 100% coverage of all, just enough to be able to ubgrade enough houses, if you keep failing to find a proper city design for this for yourself, look for a guide on this.

On top of that they need to consume certain goods, however over or underproduction can be a real PITA therefore I have this for you :

*Supply and demand calculator : http://odegroot.nl/anno2070/calculator.html
Insert the number of houses of the type you have on an island, and you are able to see presice what that island will need to allow it's people to advance. (preventing you to over or underproduce)

Finally you will require building goods to build all that, to optimise the production chains for that I have this little tool for you :

*production chains : http://anno2070.wikia.com/wiki/Production_Chains
Look at this, here you see PRECISE how many of building X to let building Y run optimal.

Now the last part :
This game has, a number of Fertility's, and a number of Minable Goods.
If you build a certain building, make sure the island you place it on, has the corrosponding fertility or good available, or it will produce nothing.

Normal Islands can have any of the following Fertility's :
Rice, Tea, Coffee, Sugar, Vegetables, Fruit, Wine, Truffle, Durum, Corn, ?*
Underwater Plateau's can have any of the following Fertility's :
Algea, Diamond, Manganese, Smoker

Normal Islands can have any of the following minable goods :
Iron, Copper, Uranium, Coal, Limestone, Gold, Sand, Lobster, Basalt, Oil
Underwater Plateau's can have any of the following minable goods :
Iron, Copper, Uranium, Gold, Bricks

While fertility's will allow you to grow items of that type on that island forever, most minable goods will run out. You will see every island has a certain stock present, and for every unit you take out of the ground, that stock will lower by 1, once it hit 0, you won't be able to mine any more of that good on that island. (while quite rare SOME minable goods will not have a number behind them but a OO sign, those will never run out)

You can however increase the availble stock on an island by using a warehouse upgrade for that minable good.
to obtain one, look in the "item" section of the trade menu when visiting NPC warehouse or arc, or research one in a lab (need tech city for that) and take it from that islands item tab once it is completed. While you will need a free socket to activate this item, once activated it will be consumed.

I will note the special ? fertility, you can use 1 warehouse slot to add 1 fertility of chooice to that island. You can obtain one by buying from NPC in item tab at their arc or warehouse, or research one in an academy (need tech city for that) and take it from that islands item tab once it is completed. Once activated it will add the fertility to that island (the ? will disapear and the new fertility will be added) however this will forever consume that warehouse socket.

TRANSPORT
if you notice you will see on the right bottom of your screen some symbols.
next to two hands holding eachother is some sort of rectangulair symbol.
Once you click it you get into your trade menu, here you can order trade routes :
*first you click new trade route (you may rename it if you like)
*next you select the islands you want to transport from and to by clickin on them on the map
*next you add per island what goods to load or unload.
*finally you add one of your ships to this route.

(you will need this a lot, because you most likely won't be able to produce everything you need on 1 island)

Last thing POWER & ECOLOGY

When power is in the red, all buildings that need power will drop production a lot.
Also your social buildings will not function properly.
So basicly always keep your power in the green.
There are different power-options that are unlocked while your city advances.
Eco options will work forever once build, while tycoon options will require you to mine for coal or uranium (and those can run out) needless to say, when you have no coal/uranium, those tycoon power plants wont produce power either.

Ecology, every island has an ecobalance, for most they start at 0, for some at a negative number.
Once you start building things on islands, you will see this number drop deeper in the red, as many buildings in this game cause negative ecology.
While production buildings are unaffected by ecology, houses will be.
(lower ecology will cause your people to be less happy and give you less tax, the reverse is true too, positive ecology will cause your people to be happier and pay more tax)
The other building that is affected are all farms/buildings that need fertility (meatfarms, fatfarms and milkfarms are unaffected) negative ecology will drop their productivity, while postive ecology will increase their productivity)

For this reason you want to raise your ecology and don't have it drop to low.
To do this you have different buildings available that are unlocked while you advance.
tycoon versions of ecology improving buildings can only restore to 0 (any surpluss ecology boost will go to waste) while eco versions can also raise ecology above 0.

Both power and ecology buildings have sometimes a blue ring around them, make sure when you place them, those do not overlap, as overlapping will severly reduce their effectiveness.

Well thats all with this you should be able to prosper.

Now about your questions about boats :
*to repair ships you can build a repair station (first tab of any building tree, it will be available to you once you have advanced to tier 2 people)
*to construct your own ships you will need to build a shipyard (3d tab of any building tree, it will be available to you advanced to tier 2 people)

=> if you have enough money you can also use the "auxelairy fleet" option (click the button with the two hands holding eachother) talk to any npc, if you have at least 60 reputation with them (you can bribe them to raise it if needed) you can use the auxelairy fleet option once an our with each of them.. and buy some extra ships that way.

Then you've missed a lot of the depth of the game.
NsN avoids combat and tends to just play maps alone, no NPCs or single/campaign missions. Not to mention all the research you've got left to do, the career points to gather, unit/warehouse plugins to mess with and undiscovered achievements.

btw, NPCs can sell unit plugins that will repair the equipped unit without the need for a crane.

NSN video are the best 1hr of learning you can find and there is some helpful guides in the guide section

I'd like to explore some of the combat aspects more, seem interesting.
Dutchgamer1982 Jul 5, 2013 @ 11:24am
Not done much combat myself,, I did kill off some NPC (hector, keto, etc) in the missions if I wanted to seize their islands or their demands for declaring war were outragious (like me removing 800+ buildings from their island) and I did kill of ships for quests..

And ofcource there is the main campaign.. with killing of father..
but none of that I considerer real "war"

(I think only player V player could ever see proper combat;)
in all other cases it aint war it is pest-controll (to quote the daleks)

NsN avoids combat
From the few times he did engage in combat, I'd say with good reason. It looks like a joke.
