They've got two things going for them, Offshore Wind Parks and Ozone Makers, but depending on whether or not you've done certain world events and have Deep Ocean or nott those get completily nullified: Guardian 1.0s give ridiculous amounts of ecobalance, can be researched by techs without special items for the guardian itself and can be ark slotted to cut down on energy consumption and influence radius, and with the Energy Transfer system it's possible to get 3 Safety Protocol IIIs (nuclear accidents -40%) and 3 of the +15 energy generation for nuclear plants, build a whole bunch nuclear plants on some island in the corner with lots of mine slots, then slot in those items and beam the energy elsewhere. Incredibly cost-efficient and you don't have to use a column of Ark slots to make them practical end-game like OWPs.
Tycoons are messy, but they do not screw around. Pollution can be fixed, but excessive land use can't and in this game efficient land is king.
EDIT: Ecos do have some nice music and all, though. Although if you want to talk favorite faction overall, the Deep Ocean techs are simply awesome. Nice building aesthetics, nice music, their Activity and Participation buildings actually serve a practical purpose instead of being eye candy, and that monument is simply magnificent. Tough to get to the final level, but once you get them there oh boy does the cash pour in.
But yes, Sorenson, you are right about the pasta production, if I want to build a huge city I need at least 2 islands due to the limited riverslots, what kinda sucks :D
But never the less, I prefer my ecos and enjoy playing them :)
Still, while this thread seems to be quite balanced I don't get how comes that the Ecos are so over represented when it comes to senate voting. Do you have any explaination about that?
FYI, a Vegan would NEVER eat a fish. So there is some flawed logic there. I see the Ecos as the ones trying to do something for the planet and the tycoons pretty much don't give a ♥♥♥♥. Also look at how a eco person lives compared to a tycoon. The Eco's are pretty much a free soicity of people collaberating together for a better goal, whereas the tycoons are an extermlly opressive police state that nothing matters for then money.
As for ark upgrades, get the 2 Star and 3 Star standard windmill upgrades and you will never need to use anything else, ever unless something uses SO MUCH POWER that you need to use the solar panels or offshore wind parks.
Guess I'll have to join Trenchcoat on his carrier.
