Are you sure there is no black tide around the island? If it was one of Vadim's old islands, an oil spill is rather likely and would ruin eco balance that badly.
I'll check for a nearby oil spill but I don't remember one.
Edit: Only an oil spill will reduce it to -500, missile parts ect only go as far as -200 max unless theres more than one on an island but I havent seen that yet.
I am trying to take Thor 's island and it is negative 999.
Edit: Try hovering over where it shows your eco balance at the top of the screen. The tooltip should tell you more.
Most likely with such a negative eco balance it is black tide from an oil spill left over from before you took over the island. As it was a war between npcs, you may have not gotten a notificationa bout it.
This all leads to another question, does negative Eco balance affect NPCs? Thors island is minus 999 but he is still growing crops...
That's one of the reasons I stopped adding those NPCs to my continuous game, the rules don't apply to them.
your going to need to get a "Clearance Device" from the Techs to clear out blown nuke plants.
