How do you defeat a player and/or take over their island?

Do you have to destroy all the buildings on the island and on every island they occupy? I've destroyed their warehouse/dock and their city center, but they are still there.

yes, you have to destroy all trace, or if you have deep ocean you can buy them out by purchasing all shares

Yup you have to remove all buildings on every island they own, warehouses, houses, production chains ect.

With deep Ocean you get the option to buy "shares" (from the dock/warehouse building) in an island and after you buy at least 3 shares you get the option to buy out an island which will remove all of there presence from that island.

It also helps to stick a warehouse on every unoccupied island as the AI wont settle them if your already there.

Thanks for your responses. Destroying everything is a lot of work as they keep rebuilding. Maybe I'll just be happy to keep them weak and unable to mount any attacks of significance...
I don't have deep ocean yet.

If you destroy the warehouse the rest will start to decay, then catch fire and disappear
