Tornadoes
Is there nothing that can be done to protect against them?
It's a bit silly to have such a random mechanic in this game. Taking hours planning and building your islands and routes just to have them destroyed at random by something outside of your control isn't fun, it's a bit frustating.
I guess I would mind it a little bit less if the destroyed building sites remained there, with a "rebuild" option - so that you wouldn't need to try to remember exactly what was there and figure out what your island is now missing.

Eh, I guess people asked for realism.

yeah keep a good ecobalance on all your island it never happen to me

Does individual islands ecobalance really matter against tornadoes?
My main island had the highest ecobalance, and was the first one to be hit.

The wiki does say it decreases the probability, though, so I'll keep that in mind.

If i remember it right, only one real bad ecobalanced island (like -200) can trigger an tornado

Build a Shield Generator (Eden Faction tech).
you can totally and fully protect your city against torndadoes by puttin up shields in your city they are avaible i think at the genius level.
i have gotten an tornado with a eco balance of 400 and i gotten a tornado with a eco balance of -100

It doesn't COMPLETELY remove the chance of it happening, only severely reduces it. In one game, I had two tornados and my main "money" island (plastic production galore, and I could position two boats between the warehouse and Thorne's ark and they'd sell stuff without even moving) had an ecobalance of around -600. Then, on another game, no island was below 0 and I got a tornado roughly 15 hours in, about twice as long as it took to get one tornado on the first game.

I'd like to strangle whoever decided to add this "feature" to an otherwise great game. What the hell was he thinking?: "lets have something that destroys a large percentage of the player's efforts every once in a while. Players should enjoy that"
I even tried to nuke one to no effect.
It just happened AGAIN after about 20 hours building in sandbox.
Whoever you are, may a tree fall on your car.

Yeah, I know what you mean. But I still leave them on (you know you can turn them off right) in a sadistic sort of way. No pain, no gain. Increases the challenge, refreshing after a certain point in the game.

Tornadoes have a very high chance of appearing when ecobalance in the sector drops fast. So for example: Sokow or Strindberg settles a new island, or you build a bunch of stuff that makes the ecobalance drop. If you play with no AIs, it's quite possible to avoid all tornadoes by keeping careful watch on the rate of change of your ecobalance, so for example try not to let it drop more than -10/20 in one go. It's annoying when you want to expand fast, but oh well.

Further, islands with a high ecobalance have a much improved chance of being avoided by the tornado, but it's never a 100%. I remember playing as ecos, having a tornado avoid literally all of mine and Moreau's islands just to completely ruin one of Strindberg's ones at the end of the map. Quite helpful actually :P

145 hours played, not a Single Tornado happened to me.

I always play Ecos tho and go for high ecobalance on most Islands. On some i have -200 or more tho but still it never happened. I did get a few Tsunamis tho (damn you underwater Powerplant thingi).

I've only come across a tornadoe once and that happened when a friend wanted to see when he destroyed all the eco buildings. When the ecobalance dropped quickly on that island it only took one minute before the tornadoe spawned.

The thing also went for my island, rather than his...

I have yet to have a tornado occur in ANY of my games, I'm actually wanting to see one.

tornadoes factor in SECTOR wide eco balence, if you have one island like -400 but the others are -50 or even positive, then your actual average is much higher.
