Uplay crashing under windows 8.1? Try this

Click start. Under the search function on the top right, search for "Run programs made for previous versions of windows.."

Click through the promps until you get to a list of programs. Select "Not Listed" at the top and then click next.

In the next window, browse to C:/Program Files ((Program Files x86 if you have a 64-bit version of windows)) /Ubisoft/Ubisoft Game Launcher. Select uplay.exe and click next.

Click the second option, "Troubleshoot Program"

Click the boxes next to BOTH "The problem worked for me in earlier versions of windows but won't install now" and "The program requires additional permissions" and then click next.

Select "Windows 7" and click next.

Click "Test this program". It will run uplay, and you should be able to log in without it crashing. From here, close uplay, and then in the compatability manager click next, and then "Save the settings for this program" before you close the window.

From here, you should be able to play. I still had to navigate back to the Ubisoft Game Launcher folder under My Computer and run Uplay.exe, and then run the game through the uplay launcher. However, it still brings up the steam overlay in game, so. A bit of an indirect, but functional way to play the game. Good luck!
