install from Steam or from Uplay??
Hi there guys :),
might be a sort of a stupid question, but please do not kill me :)
does it make any difference if I install Anno2070 from Steam (and let steam install UPlay) or if I download UPlay from ubi web site and install it and then download Anno from there?
I never really came up with understanding the double DRM stuff / I hate uplay, always say it, but still Anno2070 is too much of a cool and amazing game, just cannot resist the urge to spend a few (hundreds) of hours on it every now and then :P !

Anno 2070 is from Ubisoft. I'd download it from Uplay.

To my understanding, they are both exactly the same, the money just goes through Steam instead of Ubisoft. Buying it on steam just buys a uplay code through Steam

tldr: they result in the same thing

yes, I agree :) but the reason I asked is that I remember for a time, upon opening uplay I would be prompted with 2 icons of Anno: one was the "steam" version, the other one was the "uplay" version. Only on the steam version I had the dlc I had bought and the achievements (or whatever they are called) I had unlocked. I never had time or will to look into it, and it has been several months since I last installed or opened uplay, so maybe it was just a bug that has long since been fixed...

Yeah, that is definitely weird

I never had that, if you buy thru steam when you install you'll be prompt to link your game to your Uplay ans steam gives you the code, i never tried going directly to download from Uplay after that but its the same, when you open from steam U will come out to play

The result is not the same in the end. If you buy from Uplay, only Uplay has to run while you play. If you buy on Steam, Uplay AND Steam have to run while you play so there's less memory for your game.

and that is what makes me dislike uplay - had I known it before, I would have bought Anno2070 straight from Ubi :) !
whatever, nowadays my 2 rigs both have 8gb, so we can overlook it :)

still what Fluffy says makes me think it was a bug or something like that: you guys agree it does not make a lot of sense to see 2 copies of the same game!

So, do you need to have a Uplay account in order to play Anno 2070 through Steam, or does Steam take care of that for you, and it is transparent?
FluffyNo3 Jul 5, 2016 @ 10:18pm
Regardless of who you buy from, you still need a Ubisoft account. Steam just buys you a Ubisoft key, and then you log in to Uplay and redeem the code

I really don't n derstand why gamers don't like uPlay so much: they give presents and games come from them, not from Steam.

Naej believe me it is not a matter that I do not like Uplay... ok, haters will hate, so most probably there are ppl who just hate Uplay for tha sake of hating it :) after all, the same happened to steam when it was first released.
I am so mad at uplay because if I close steam, open uplay and launch Anno, uplay will open steam anyhow...
Look, if you tell me "once you buy the game out of steam you will have a key that will be used by uplay", ok, no problem. At the end of the day, it is the same mechanic of mmorpg like Marvel Heroes and DC Universe, and personally I would have absolutely no problem with it.
but the thing is, why a double DRM?
true, today's rig can handle a BUNCH of application running at the same time, so the performance hit due to another application actually sleeping in background is negligible. still, why?
just to add more, I had *a lot* of problems with UPlay authentication: never had one with steam. Uplay used to require to run as admin (not really tried recently), Steam never required it.

let me highlight the point: if you find a way to install Uplay so that I do not require Steam to run Anno, you bought me :)
I acknowledge in the past my comments about Up were much harsher. but please consider in the heat of the moment we all say or do things we later regret. as I told you, I had problems with authentication, and I live a very stressful life, so when I reach home all I want is disconnect... well, you got the point, I do not think I am the only one who runs from morning to evening :)

hope this clarifies my point of view... as always, haters will hate so someone else will shot on uplay just because it exists...

If you don't want to run Steam in order to run Anno, then buy it from the Ubisoft store and run it directly from Uplay

But in the end, it's your game and you can buy it from wherever you want to

Fine Fluffy, infact if I had known it... :D

At least in the german Ubi shop Anno 2070 is not available as PC download or PC DVD. So it
seems you would have to look at amazon etc.
