despite the 2D nicely intricate graphics, the game was / is Well balanced....
.
meaning, Ai elite creature inflation was proportionate to your core creature manufacturing and then proportionate to your elite creature production as the game advanced. meaning you could actually win
.
I'm stuck on HOMM 6 campaign, ... elite creatures not available yet, so I amassed 3000 strong core creatures, only to be decimated by 500 elite Map creatures which guard an artifact I need to advance to the next round...
.
In game months to gather an army like that, I obviously have to be an elite player to win, or play on easy, which is too easy.
.
Gaming experience is Rubbish either way.
Heroes II, V, VI and VII are my favourites. Though i wish Heroes VI hadn't removed the sylvan faction.
Heroes III was nice for the time but aged badly. Heroes IV was all kinds of weird in graphics, musi, sounds and unit types, that kind of gave me a headache when i looked at it again. but if you could get past that, ok.
