heroes game probably the third (its the one with the most active community at least, and with a lot more mods and stuff)
might and magic maybe the 6th? 6-7-8 are all pretty good though

I don't know about regular Might & Magic, but the best Heroes game, in my opinion, is Heroes V. III is good, II is good (and I think it aged better than III), IV tries new stuff but is only partly successful and feels a little unfinished, and VI solid but kinda just more of the same.

If you've never played a Heroes game, either V or VI are probably the best places to start right now.

I havent tried 1 and 6 but I like 4 and 2 also 3 is worth checking. The heroes 4 is good apart from a few bugs that you might not notice. The heroes 5 is very nice also but the cutscenes are quite bad and haven't aged well but the real game looks nice as do 4. Heroes 2 is a real classic and there is not much to say other than get it ! 3 I probably have played most but the graphics aint so good, it has a special style of graphic that you will either love or hate:-)

3 all the way

I have been looking at 3 and yes, the graphics are the cause of my hesitancy.
Despite that, what makes 3 the best?
Was it a better story or mechanics?

^Nostalgia mostly. Heroes III has the most factions, and maaaybe the best balance between them. So if you're looking for multiplayer, III is still real solid. It also has the most established mod scene and die hard fan base. Mechanically, it's a little more complex than I or II, but less IV thru VI. Story wise Heroes III is pretty standard fair; the story has never been this series strong point, but III's is decent enough.
Heroes III hasn't aged super well, but I wouldn't say it has any significant flaws. If you want to play multiplayer, I'd say III is probably your best bet because of balance and number of people still playing. If you're looking to play the campaign, I'd go with V or VI because they're a little more mechanically deep, have better graphics and tell a slightly better story.
Obviously, make sure you're OK with Uplay before getting VI.

Yeah, whats the deal with UPlay? I see alot mentioned about it, but not sure I understand whats going on.

^Uplay is basically Ubisoft's (publisher of the Heroes games since V) version of Steam. All their mid and top tier releases use it. It's a client program you have to download and sign on to with a unique name and password, and it organizes your games, syncs saves in cloud storage, and has it's own achievement system (all pretty much like Steam). And you can buy Ubisoft games directly from Uplay if you want to.

The downside of Uplay (besides being another name and password you need to keep track of) is that it doesn't always work for everybody. I've never had an issue with it personally (and I've been using it since Assassin's Creed II), but a lot folks have posted about how Uplay wont sign on, or launch their games reliably, which means they weren't able to play the games they bought which use it. It also doesn't replace Steam, so if you bought a Ubisoft game from Steam (like Heroes VI here) you'd ALSO need to have Uplay running to play it.

If it works, Uplay is just a minor inconvenience. If it doesn't work, Uplay is a total show stopper. I recommend downloading Uplay and seeing if you can make an account and sign on ok before buying anything that requires it.

Oh! I should also point out that the Might & Magic Humble Bundle is still up for another four hours. You can get Heroes II and IV for as little as $1, or ALL the Heroes games (with expansions) for $15. They all use Uplay, but this is a good way to test Uplay and the series without needing to risk much money.
Just google Might & Magic Humble Bundle.

You'll also get to decide how much of what you pay goes to Ubi, Humble, and charity. So it's a good cause and Humble Bundle is a legit site, selling with the blessing the publishers, so you aren't in danger of buying shady keys.

For HoMM, a lot of people say 3 (I haven't had a ton of experience in the series though). For the original Might & Magic series, I think 4-5 (which combine to form one large game) is great. My favorite is M&M2, though...but part of that is probably nostalgia because that is the first one I played, and I played it back when EGA graphics were new. That said, I do love M&M 6-8 as well :) If you want a modern interface, M&M X (which was released recently) is also fairly good...not the best in the series, but possibly easier for the modern gamer to get into.

I would say the ones to avoid at first are M&M1 (unless you like old school CRPGs...but for the average person M&M1 could be frustrating), and M&M9 (which was rushed to release; New World Computing/3DO declared bankruptcy shortly afterward).
three by far and I remember seeing the first one on a cd magazine (cd's were new back then). a year before it's release.
