My favorite faction is Sanctuary, I like the way their units can control the opponent a lot and have high initiative, Honor at level 2 is already massively useful, and their overall sinergy is just very good ( Sacred Kirins can give your whole army extra turns for an instance) to the point of being abusive. I also like how temple of Shalassa makes a Magic Sanctuary hero much more lethal than any other faction's.

But then again that is my favorite faction to play as. If you want to know which is the strongest/best faction, that's a completely different point. In that case it would go like this: Necropolis > Haven > Sanctuary > Dungeon > Stronghold > Inferno.

I gotta say, I love playing with Pit Lords (Inferno) and Fate Spinners (Necropolis) - they're just the coolest of the Champion creatures, imho. If you have a might hero with the Cleave ability, you can jump the opposing army with your pit lords and wipe out 2-3 units before they even get a turn. Very satisfying! And both the Fate Spinner dual forms can wreak massive damage on the enemy. :-)

At the risk of sounding like a tier-tool, I'm going with Necropolis. I like building Magic heroes with a good variety of spells, and since Necromancers don't have to spend ability points on Charismatic Leader like basically every other hero, they get to do a lot more magicking than other magic heroes.

My least favourite faction so far is probably Sanctuary. I'm still very new to this game, and I'm just not sure what to DO with Santuary units. They got all these byzantine abilites, but all seem so frail and and hit like their weapons are made of rolled-up newspapers. I'm sure that, once you know how to use them, they can be quite effective, but I haven't reached that level yet.

Which is probably why Stronghold is my second favourite faction. "Apply club to face" is a tactic that I can wrap my head around easily, making it easier to wing it.

Inferno, just because it was my favorite faction thoughout all HoMM games I've played. They are weakest though, yes, but only from the start till midgame, if you let them advance, they become unbeatable, hence insta-summon Pit-Lords or Juggernauts inside enemy ranks quickly devastating few stacks completely, in later tiers you can basically capture enemy fully upgareded castles with 10x stronger armies inside with Portal ability pretty easy.

@Kayeka
Two units create backbone of their army: Pearl Priestesses with best possible healing ability in game, you can basically put regen on any of your units (like Spring Spirit or Kensei) and tank inside enemy stacks not worrying about losses. And Kappa Shoyas being cheap core creatures with best distance attack killing enemies in radius and more importantly giving you insane initiative early game, so that insures your hero can act before enemy's which often results in few killed enemy stacks in the begining of the combat.

I've only played Stronghold, Sanctuary and Dungeon so far. Stronghold was basic...offensive power play. Sanctuary was really dry until you have a high level magic hero and a lot of units to synergize with. They felt weak early game, but with all their abilities mixed up in the end, they were a massive defensive force that controlled the battlefield.

Playing as Dungeon right now, and I'm liking their units the best. Assassins, teleporting faceless, flying dragons and manticores, poisons everywhere, debuffs, and stealth are just fun!

Necropolis, because doesn't matter who many troops die you can always resurrect them unless you dont have enough money

Necropolis has been my favorite from Heroes 3 days and doesn't disappoint here. Dungeon is a close second though with those wonderful chakram dancers of theirs. I love killing 2-5 entire stacks with a single curved path of death. Really helped on getting that "kill 7 stacks before they can act" achievment.

Nice guys, heroes 3 was the pinnicale of this game tho:) but all games had its charm:)

Having tried every faction and every type of might/magic blood/tears combo, I'd have to say that my favorite varies from time to time, but it's never Naga's. Simply because of the fact that they are absolutely horrible at attacking towns. Unless teleport can move units behind the walls (I don't use prime magic very much), you have 2 casters doing less than 50% of their damage while one guy slowly bashes down the gate... other factions have units that are good at bashing the gate (e.g. juggernauts for inferno and cyclops for barbarians) but all nagas suck at it. not only that, but if you're playing a blood water magic build, it takes eons to kill other nagas (like the 2nd campaign mission). I like some of their units individually, but as a whole, they're terrible. I'd say that inferno tends to be my favorite more than the others, though, because of the havoc you can wreak with a blood might build (heroic charge/cleave w/ luck anyone?).

I agree with Peyton about heroes 3 being great though, but I like the direction the character building and campaigns have gone. but HoMM3 has the best units =P.

I personally like the Necropolis. The Vampires do the tanking(cast some usefull spell on them), while your healers help them taking the brunt of the attack(AoE damage and heal).
The way you can organize kills to gain more necromancy powers for ressurection is fun and rewarding, and easier to calculate than other factions abilities.
And I find both might and magic heroes fun and rewarding to play with.

Another, more simple faction I also have had a lot of fun with is Tear Magic Stronghold. Taking some strong support spells and abilities to back up your very powerfull units makes for an army that can absorb huge amounts of punishment and deal it back just as easy.
