New to the genre. Worth it? What mods to use?

Hi All, I like my combat flight sims and ww2 grand strategies etc. I've seen that SH is a series with a long tradition and this last one looks very good graphic wise, but I'm putt off by the bad reviews.

Alas, let's not give up hope. Like Il2 Cliffs of Dover that was broken on release and has been modded to excellence - I read somewhere that there are mods for this game that improve it.

So first question is it worth starting here or should I start with SH 3 or 4 instead.

If modded SH5 is the best out of all of them - can anybody recommend what mods to use for historical accuracy and improved stability?

Steam version SH 5 is bad because we can't use the patch (this gives some options).

if you want to play it vanilla style then forget about it.

Got steam version, hasn't been butggy 4 me, but maybe I just don't know what I'm missing :)

yep, you dont know what your missing....go over to subsim.com and get modded up.

radiofunk, darkwraith UI mods...its unlimited. just make sure you change mods saved i n harbour, not during patrol.

To get a real feel for what Silent Hunter was, start with Silent Hunter 3, and use either GWX, or Living Silent Hunter III. SH5, is an attempt to add new depth to the series clearly the original creators are all gone from the series SH5 is evidence of that. So buggy even with mods my copy still crashes I can not make it past Happy Times, without the campaign. Ending on its own like the timer is up and the Happy Times are over. Generally I am only able to get 2 of 8 points awarded so I fail Happy Times. Each and every time modded and un modded I have reinstalled and started over twice now. It is unfortunate Ubisoft ruined the game I wonder what it would have been like had the original Silent Hunter team built the game.

I went and bought the boxed version of silent hunter v... and boom there was something missing.... no cd key.. I looked everywhere in the box.. and nothing... now I get this steam version and nothing... I hope I can go straight to uplay and get the game without steam. so I can put the mods on.. that would be cool... does anyone have any advice? is it possible to go straight to uplay.... I don't get why they made it so you can get it through steam if you can get it on uplay.

I bought a UBISOFT Collection triple DVD for £9.99 It containted Hereos over Europe (no key), SH 5 ( non steam (!) cd key) and il2 Cliffs of Dover (steam cd key)

I was hoping the SH5 would be a steam one, but I guess I'll have to go through Uplay.

The Steam Version start Uplay when you hit play :P

isnt it better to just have the uplay sh5 rather than steam.. cuz you cannot get third party patches. also you still have to go through uplay... and steam at the same time if you go with the steam version.

You all ♥♥♥♥♥ the game is so bugged and glitchy!!!!!! I can play it completely fine with not one single MOD. I tested this last night by playing SH3 for about 3 hours then SH5 for about 4 and as far as i could tell i seen no "flaws"

The steam version can be modded you need to use JGSME, to mod the game but I do not advise this game I prefer Silent Hunter 3 with GWX, and other mods to find mods I use subsim.com it requires a free account to. Gwx.. does it do anything for the crew management? cuz thats really all I need modded... even at patch 1.4b if I were to press the buttons.. where it places the crew based on where you need them at the time... like if on the surface... I press that button to relieve battle station. a couple times and then the game crashes
