SH3, SH4, or SH5?

Which is the best game now? I played SH3 for ages many years ago and enjoyed it. I played SH4 a little bit but not much many years ago and liked the graphics but never got into the campaign much. Now I feel like getting a sub game again I have thought about Cold Waters but I enjoy first person games the best. So which game is the better and why?

if you check out the Steam Charts[steamcharts.com], SH3 is the one that has the most players.

I have only SH5. It has some serious bugs though that will never be fixed (haven't been fixed for 8-9 years, they are not going to fix it now, not for the circa 50 players online).

I've played SH3 to death I couldn't play it again. SH4 looks interesting. I got the SH pack in the end so I can pick the best one to play. At the moment I am playing SH5 and enjoying it. And there is a very large The Wolves Of The Sea mod for SH5 that supposedly fixes a lot of issues, I haven't tried that myself yet. I think SH5 has some interesting features. But UBOAT is coming out soon as well and that looks interesting. Lots of sub game possibilities at the moment.

I may have to try and pick up the wolves of the sea. Havent tried that yet. SH5 seems to have a lot of hate but I have been enjoying it so far. Also played alot of SH3 back when it came out. And to me SH5 feels more like that one so maybe thats why I like it

Sh3 but due to the graphics i couldnt bare to play again. You should try sh5 with mods. Dont go vanilla one bit because its practically unplayable due to broken missions.

SH3 is amazing esp with GWX or LSH mods. Which can be installed on Steam version.

SH5 gets loads of negative comments. However I find with darkwraith more and Wolves of Steel mega mod it's a great game. However you can't use steam version well def not for the important darkwraith fixes. So get hold of non steam version.

SH4 is Pacific and holds no interest for me.

SH3 with GWX mod or WAC5 mod is the best. Compared to SH5 which has better grafics and a large walkable sub, SH3 has all types of submarines and a better gameplay. SH5 without heavy modding is crap, you would need to load WoS mod and the gameplay is difficult and poorly documented.

This one (SH5) is a very pretty, very fancy broken bugfest only get it if you are willing to spend quite a few hours researching, downloading, and configuring mods to make the game even playable.

Want a sub sim? get SH3.

Actually The Wolves of Steel mega mod works fine with the Steam version now as it has a patcher built in now. The WOS mod adds all the mods needed to fix the game bugs in stock version as well as all the eye candy from the various authors on Subsim. But a word of caution do not add any other mods to WOS than what comes with it. It is a complete package and adding anything else will break the game again. That said you can add the english voices back by copying them from your backup copy of the game. You can get the bluer water back by getting the patch from the Dynamic weather mod version 2.9 , Be sure to make a clean backup copy of the game before modding and read the install instructions. Also for any one who feels intimidated by the manual targetting there are options to target automaticaly and you don't have to use manual navigation.

Hi, there isn't a best one, they are all good for different reasons so get all of them.

SH3 for the nice Type XXI boats (and the GWX mod, obviously) and the best gameplay
SH4 for the U-Boat missions Add on (you can mirror Wolfgang Luth's real career properly)
SH5 for Wolves of Steel mod and the fact it STILL has the best water effects in a subsim
Cold Waters for the superb Dot Mod and Epic mods

Some will say the water effects in U-BOAT are superior but no, SHV's sea is still much better (and smoother too), with no micro-stuttering like U-BOAT has.

it doesnt matter how old the thread is, ive just come back to the game after a 5 year break. I've got a new computer, so im revisiting all the games that wouldn't play on the old one. Ive just found your advice useful.

I like very much SH5 Maps tools and many features of the MODS, also like to play SH4 FOTRS find it very fun to play .

I much prefer the crew management with separate crew members like SHIII and IV for the pacific. SH5 simplified too many things and needs a mot more mods to make it better but still the crew management isn't as good as the other two.

I own both sh4 and sh5. 4 is very cool japanese campaign. SH5 is awesome with wolves of steel mod. Really get the feeling your in a U-boat even german language. Highly recommend.
