Without knowing what you would like, it's hard to give you a proper advise...
Have you ever played SH III? So you might want to pick one that lets you switch positions by pressing a key...sound mods like the sounds from the movie "Das Boot" (the crashdive sequence for example)...music mods for playing on the grammophone...immersion mods, graphical overhauls, slideout dials...there's so many different mods out there...also complete overhauls, where most of the mentioned stuff is already implemented...
But what you need, no matter what, is the JSGME mod enabler http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=204594

Best thing would be, to have a look yourself:

Edit: maybe also, depending on how good your german is, here:

Thanks for responding.

Is this true ? I read that you can't mod the Steam version ?

Some mods don't seem to work with it, I have no problems so far....

And I also digged a bit and found this page from subsims:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=162013

Also a helpful site (Ubisoft account needed):

https://forums.ubi.com/forumdisplay.php/116-Silent-Hunter-5

Mods on Ubisoft...again, page seem to exist only in german...

This is the one I have installed (plus a few for sounds, diesel exhaust smoke, music and the like)

Once again I would like to thank you for your help. Yes sorry I should have given a little background :

I have played them all since SH1 and Silent Service before that. I am an intermediate skill Captain. I still, after all these years, have problems with destroyers and depth charges.

I was looking for an upgrade on the base game really, with a good mix of fun and realism.

Than you might know the slide out dials and JSGME from SH3..and yes, I also play SH since ages, at the moment not that often..too many other games, you know ;-)
SubSim forums are still kind of active, and they have a "how to mod" tutorial somewhere there too...else, just make a thread and ask.
It's just sad that you don't get to play as many submarines in SH5 as you had available in SH3...
I really hope that there is somewhere out there something in development that lets us play all subs on all sides, Germany, UK, USA and Japan, maybe even some that existed only on the drawing board..

And since you mentioned still having problems with destroyers:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=165015

I never liked that 1 2 3 dot connecting aiming system...

Also, in case you -really-want "that" mod that doesn't run on the steam version...here's a (not so simple) tutorial on how to change the steam SH5.exe to a patched one:

I wish they had an easier way to mod this game for simple minded old timers like me. You have to join subsim then down load a mod software then down load the mods then jump through hoops to get it to work on steam....... I'd love to mod mine to be history accorate but just not worth the hassle.

Yeah...SH5 isn't really that modding friendly than other games like Skyrim or Fallout 4

But if you don't want to use one of the big overhaul mods but just some soundfiles and such, you really need only that JSGME, the mod enabler, and whatever mod you want...

And talking about old timers...I'm no spring chicken either..born in '67 ;-)

Thanks
Best full conversion mods would be Wolves of steel or Open Horizen, both great, Wolves of Steel a bit more hardcore

Yes, they claim they don't but they work with it perfectly fine with JSGME.

The most complete mod that will fix most bugs in the game and add awesome content too is called TWoS or The Wolfes of Steel. Go to www.subsim.com and read how to install and play it.
It's difficult being on Steam and saying that the Steam version of the game is not the good one, but: it's the case, so you may have some troubles to install mods with the Steam version.
