This old noob needs help...
I've been an on-and-off fan of YuGiOh since the first generation, and got this game after a recent desire to have a YuGiOh game on my PC. My knowledge of this tcg is specifically limited to the first and second generation (Duelist Kingdom, Battle City, Some of that thing with Dartz and parts of YuGiOh GX). That being said, I feel that I am at a big disadvantage since I have no knowledge of the Synchro, XYZ, Pendulum monsters and the other couple thousands of cards that have been introduced to the game (aka how to use them, What cards are good, etc). Therefore, I've had a lot of trouble during the GX, 5Ds, and ZEXAL generations (I don't have any of the ARC-V DLC). Now with all that in mind, what are some tips that this forum can impart onto me in constructing a deck that can combat all these new monster types? Thanks, Praise Slifer.

my first advice would be to stop praying slifer , he will be no help against top tier deck ^^
you have a lot of mechanics to learn , but you ll see syncro and xyz are easy to understand mechanics, try to play with yusei and yuma decks (5D and zexal) to practice

The first of each of the story arcs in this game introduces a new summon. They do a really good job of teaching you the basics. I hadn't learnt how to Pendulum Summon before playing this game, but it took me about 5 minutes just by reading through the instructions.

Each type of summon has it's own basic structure deck. Try giving those a shot to make yourself comfortable with the cards before trying to put them into a deck. I hear the fusion one is actually pretty good. :)

Hi. Asking a personal question first, if I may.
Why don't you actually learn to duel like that (Synchro summon, XYZs, Pendulums etc)?

I could suggest good old fashioned cards that stop any player from special summoning like Vanity's Fiend, Vanity's Emptiness, Jowgen the Spiritualist and others. "Testudo erat Numen" is useful in that regard as well. I'd also use Lava Golem! It's a special summon by all means (dont expect the anti-ss cards to stay on the field for long) but it is its summoning condition that I enjoy the most. Since most of those OP new cards can't be even targeted, or destroyed or whatever, Lava Golem gets rid of whatever irritates you, for at least one turn. Just include spells and traps that stop him as well.

Other than that, I'd also use cards that banish the monsters when they are sent to the grave, like Dimensional Fissure and Macro Cosmos (you've witnessed that all archetypes return from the grave or supply advantages when sent to the graveyard). At least with those permanent Spell and Trap cards you can halt all that spamming for sometime.

I hope that helped :)

Also, fortunately this game has really good tutorials, so It's not that hard to learn the new Synchro/Xyz/Pendulum...
