Prey
Does this Prey game have anything in common with the Prey 2006 game?
Like are there mimics? Are the gameplay mechanics similar?

Prey 2006 is a alien shooter
This is an immersive sim 0450 game. Has rpg elements and inventory management. The *only* thing these two games have in common is the name, that is all

Then why do they share the name? Are they both apart of the same game series? Like lore wise?

The only thing in common is that both are Sci-Fi with space and aliens. That's it...
Oh.. and the wrench.

Zenimax was having Bethesda do company expansion in the mid 2000’s and among the companies they were seeking to partner with or acquire included Human Head Studios, the maker of Prey (2006). Sometime after Prey 2 (now being funded by Bethesda and developed by Human Head) was announced and shown, Bethesda allegedly began withdrawing production support that put Human Head in financial crisis mode. Bethesda then engaged in a hostile takeover of the company and the “Prey” license. If I’m not mistaken, they only got the license and separated from Human Head, who later shut down.

Shortly after Bethesda’s newly acquired subsidiary Arkane Studios finished Dishonored, they consulted Arkane studio head Raphael Colintonio on making a System Shock inspired sci-fi game (considering Colintonio’s admiration of immersive games like System Shock).

So Prey (2017) is fundamentally a product of a hostile takeover of a brand on part of Bethesda and an opportunity for Arkane to make an immersive sim akin to System Shock. There is no textual relationship between the two Preys, only name recognition for easier branding. But considering the overwhelming negative press Bethesda accrued over the Human Head debacle, the “Prey” branding may not have done the kind of the market utility they wanted it to do for Prey (2017).

No, Prey 2006 is a pretty straightforward first-person shooter that doesn't have any relation to this game. It's pretty fun though, and might have been the first game to feature portals (before Portal came out even? Not sure)

Since it's too boring just to have me google that for you, let's just take it down a layer and point out this obvious fact: this game actually has more in common with Prey 2006 than Prey 2006 had with the original concept of Prey, to be perfectly honest.

With a name as short, generic, and common as Prey (not even really describing the plot of Prey 2006 particularly well either), it was only a matter of time before the name was used for something else. Especially since it was basically the only game Human Head ever worked on that even reviewed well - and it reviewed only as well as this Prey, which led to an exodus from Arkane.

I remember seeing Prey in game informer magazine in the late 2000's or very early 2010's. Looked interesting enough. Sad to see Bethesda did what they did if that's what happened.

Completely different case. This link shows modern games that had the same name of abandonwares from 30 years ago.

Prey 2006 and Prey 2017 is the same Ip that was acquired by a different publisher and after cancelling a sequel, decided to reboot.

Pretty much like Tomb Raider 1996 and Tomb Raider 2013.

This is insane for 1997. No wonder they couldn't deliver. The story wasn't in place, but the concept still made through the final release. Prey 2006 was also quite impressive on release. I remember the Portal stuff blowing my mind. It was the best looking game I've ever seen up to that point.
