In the meantime, a few tips for conserving ammo:
1. Don't use the shotgun against mimics, greater mimics, preferably not corrupted operators. Phantoms and tougher only.
2. Be sure to use it at fairly close range, not quite melee range but close. The shotgun does much less damage at pistol range.
3. If an enemy is down to low health, try to finish it off with a pistol or a wrench.
It's not that bad cause they respawn after a certain point long as you nab the recycling skill early on and use your wrench on anything that isn't a phantom you should be good to go even on nightmare+hardcore options.
one of the most important things to keep in mind, though....you don't gain anything through the act of directly killing the enemy. as long as the enemy is destroyed, either through the environment or from a turret, the enemy will drop their loot. prey often gives you the tools to accomplish this without having to resort through direct force most of the time, up until the really big guys start coming after you and there's no cover. that's when you want to burn your stockpile.
if you don't care about injecting typhon powers, it's also pretty effective to get the lifting power so you can deck weaker typhons in the face for free using your buff arms to hurl crates at them.
