Prey(2017) is definetly NOT short, likely 20-40 hours for first playtrough.
My first took 33 hours on hard with heavy exploration.
Difficulty depends if you use optional survival difficulties and also your general difficulty that can be changed at any time.
Nightmare with all survival options on is definetly hard but still easier than System shock 2 on impossible.
Normal is likely harder than most current games on normal.
You do not have many convectional weapons........and inventory is limited.
Many weapons do not even deal dmg just disable enemies.
Tough using psi skills even throwing stuff via leverage or using enviormental stuff could count as weapons......
.So many ways to kill OR avoid stuff in Prey(2017).
Game basically offers many choices to play your way a good immersive Sim game NOT a shooter game.
Main appeal is complexity and game is rewarding creative thinking to do stuff your own way.
And as most Imm Simms game has many secrets and explorations is highly rewarded.
Also has many moral decisions and high replay value.
As a downside game is not a dumped down lineal shooter so many people might find it harder to get into game due to complexity and less handholding.
Imo Prey has scary elements but not that much.
That said almost everything can be a Mimic and suddently attack you.
Also it can be more challenging to do 1 run with only humanskills and 1 another run with only typhonskills and a third run with no one skills. For this sort of runs are achievements.
There are also settings which make your survival difficultier so you cant clear a area in seconds.
I love this game and can recommend it. But people who are complaining about this game are diehardshooters or people who did a sort of speedrun and then are upset the game isnt long enough or cant master the fighting and surviving and dont feel the need to sneak past difficult and strong enemies.
In short, get it. One of the best games of all time, for almost free atm. :)
What I got to experience was pretty good, would love to play it more if it wouldnt crash my other programms aswell and I wouldnt need to replay some sections at any given time.
Game offers superb quality in form of locations, environmental story telling, story itself and characters who feel so real I'm astonished. It's a game about exploration, rushing ruins it all - but pace is up to you.
Just as importantly, gameplay is really fun. Whenever it's about problem solving or combat, you have a lot of freedom how to aproach the situation. Going around or over things, lifting heavy objects, exploding/erasing things, repairing or cutting off power, squeezing through tiny spaces or unlocking consoles remotely, hacking vs looking for passwords... Shooting, smacking, crushing, fire, electricity, psionics, explosions, turrets, traps... Options are numerous and it really feels like you can do things your own way. At times it feels like cheating or abusing game mechanics - it was intentionaly designed that way!
Game actually is a bit difficult. Even on normal difficulty enemies hit you hard, they dangerous - but so are you. Every enemy fights and must be fought differently. There are just few weapons, you are given security guns and repurposed tools. You are a scientist who adapts to crazy situation, aside for blasting things, use your brain and environment! Some weapons are best to use together. Some help exploit physics.
Resources are limitted, and that means ammunition, grenades, healing items and crafting materials. If you feel like you cannot keep up with them, nothing stops you from focusing on Psi abilities (magic) or melee and environment combat. Throwing heavy things at enemies is free, you know.
Plus, it's not like you are forced to fight, usually you can just run away or sneak by. You do not gain much from fighting, so avoidance is a nice way of saving resources.
It's the only game I know that scares me in full light. It isn't very scary, but neither are horror games. Most of the fear comes from early stages where you are the prey - once you turn into a chad with equipment and skills, roles reverse and you feel more confident.
If I was to complain about anything, it would be:
-janky controls and UI (the only Bethesda aspect I feel in this game), but after few hours it all feels natural
-small variety of weapons (definitely enough, but would never hurt to have few more)
-firearms not keeping up with sheer absurdity of power that melee combat and magic can reach (but guns are still effective and worth to have)
Mooncrash has a very different gameplay but I highly recommend as well!
