If you find a boxed copy you can still activate the cd-key on Steam. Thats how I have a Steam version.
Anything problematic about this subject? I made a topic on the Steam Discussions about which game people would like to be region unlocked or being able to buy again, and I mention that I was looking for the original Prey. And the topic got deleted! WTH?

Probably had nothing to do with Prey unless they were discussing illegal means of obtaining.

Nothing illegal about activating a key to a game you own on Steam. Purchase a boxed copy, activate the cd-key... no problem.

I mentioned nothing illegal or anthing offensive. When I checked my notification it only had one reply, but Steam don't even allow you to read messages of deleted/moved topics.

I found a copy at a local bookstore that happened to carry used electronics and PC games. You can also check out something like E-Bay. The only issue will be if you buy a used copy its possible the previous owner may have already activated the key on Steam which will, of course, prevent you from activating the key (on Steam, will still be playable on your computer tho).

If you DO find a copy that hasn't been activated and you use the key on Steam don't be a jerk-ass and sell it to others as they may want to activate a Steam CD key too. If you do sell it/give it to a friend make sure they know they wont be able to activate a Steam version.

"Steam key"??? what is that?
DogMeat Jul 8, 2016 @ 12:52pm
What I meant was just the CD-key. Only one person can activate a Prey CD-key on Steam. If you then sell the game to someone else they wont be able to activate the CD-key on Steam, but will still be able to activate and play it on their computer. Technically selling your copy after activating it on Steam is illegal, but its also being a jerk if the person you sell it to is hoping to activate it on Steam.

If or when I buy HH's Prey, I don't intend to activate any Steam key. Why I would do that???

You have it in your Steam library and can download it any time you want opposed to installing from a CD which can get lost/broken.

The thread is about Prey on Steam so I'm just letting people know how to play Prey on Steam...

Now I understood. Thanks.

Also, apparently a website is selling Prey 1 (2006) cd-keys online.
https://steamcommunity.com/app/3970/discussions/0/351659808478006472/
IMPORTANT: BE VERY AWARE THAT THE WEBSITE IS CENSORED BY STEAM AS A SHADY KEY-SELLER AND SURE ENOUGH SOME PEOPLE ARE GETTING USED KEYS!

Sorry for the all-caps just make sure you realize that if you buy from that website. Apparently you can get a refund if your key is already activated but just be cautious and use your judgement.
