BioShock is going to be the most similar game you can play. System Shock 2 is really what Prey is the spiritual successor of and it is also a great game but it's definitely dated at this point.

Maybe my expectations were just off but I hated SOMA. It started off feeling like it had a lot of potential and I had a lot of visions of System Shock 2 but then the game turned out to not really have any gameplay. It's just a game of sneaking around trying to not be seen by a small number off monsters. There was basically no combat or puzzles or real exploration.

The setting was really well done and definitely scary but it felt like they made the wrong game.

With quests, first person view, decisions and gun/melee combat: Cyberpunk 2077, alongside all the other games mentioned here.

Nothing else scratches that itch, does it? NOTHING will.

System Shock 2 is the undisputed leader, especially considering Prey was definitely inspired by it, and by extension Bioshock as well. Bioshock kinda missed the point a little bit by lacking RPG features and flexibility with how you can explore the world but it's still a good little game if you're currently feeling for games like this.

At the very least what Bioshock lacked in gameplay it made up in atmosphere and story, improving dramatically on the audio logs compared to System Shock 2 and (probably) setting the bar for telling a story about a world from setpieces alone instead of cutscenes / scripted sequences. Bioshock is a game you can really drink in.

Can't speak for Infinite though, never played it. I saw the bright colours and energy shield tonic and it kinda took a backseat. I really should play it soon :steammocking:

Can also consider Cyberpunk 2077 (I know it had a terrible release but playing it made me miss Prey lol so that's why I'm currently playing through Prey again) as well as the other classics like Deus Ex along with its derivatives Human Revolution and Mankind Divided?

I'm sure you know about Dishonored as well. I could never get into those games but seeing as Arkane also made those and they feel like they play pretty similar from my limited memory of the first game so, yeah. Maybe keep your eye out for Deathloop too, it might not suck!

If you're going to look into System Shock 2, you may as well look into Thief 1 and 2 as well (maybe even Deadly Shadows, but it's a bit different from the first two games).

The classic holy trinity of Thief, System Shock and Deus Ex. Should keep you going for a while!

Yeah, I always had trouble buying that BioShock was a spiritual successor to SS2 but I can't entirely explain that. Part of it is that BS never felt like a horror game to me. And yeah, it did feel lighter on the RPG parts. Of course BS is still a fantastic game.

I'll second this. At leaset Thief 2. Deadly Shadows (Thief 3) was a big step back but still a decent game if you're a fan of the previous games.

Observation was an okay game but it is not worth $10 let alone the ridiculous $25 full price.

But this was a good game and definitely worth $3. Probaby not $20 though.
