If this is not the case for other people, then I'm glad, because it is obnoxious, and I wouldn't want it to deter people from playing what is otherwise one of my favourite games.
What about loitering? Does anyone have the Moon Shark do a 3-stop circuit in front of their location, indefinitely?
Again, it's not supposed to have a cone of vision, it's not supposed to see you unless you touch the regolith. It's blind. It just happens to be around you because it knows something is going on around there. If it's attacking you and you never once touched the sand, then yes, that is a bug.
The tentacle grenades don't work the same way though (sadly). Typhon just seem to shrug them off, and they are usually more interested in attacking me than any nearby typhon anyway. xD
Another tip for getting by the Sand Shark. I always take the artax? propulsion device, as well as the advanced propulsion mod (it's 1000 sim points or 1500 or w/e). It costs about 2500 total for both purchases, but it allows you to zoom around the crater and you will barely ever touch the ground. You can double tap space for a fast boost but I don't recommend this unless you REALLY need to dodge something. It just drains your jets for a quick boost.
But really the tentacle nests will make the moon shark a joke. :)
Edit: I also suggest completing Riley Yu's objective if you haven't already. It unlocks another way to deal with the moon sharks.
Personally I just bring a spore and use them for a free Delay_Loop.time
