Possible Hidden Melee Mechanics?
So, at one point in the area just before you enter the Talos 1 lobby, you get attacked by several mimics at once. Now, when one of them attempted to ambush me, I instictively hit the right trigger (I use a gamepad) to swing at it with a wrench. What i didn't expect was the mimic to be hit back a couple feet give or take, and the fact that i seemed to take no damage from the attack. As I've continued to explore the station, I've tried this multiple times with consistent results on various Typhon creatures. Is it possible that the developers put in some sort of hidden parry system to melee combat. to make it more of a viable option? Or is this something everyone else is aware of and I just missed the tutorial prompt explaining this?

I dunno about a parry system, but I do know that wrench attacks have a random chance to knock back/knock over enemies when you hit them. There's actually a chipset that increases the chance of this happening.

What does the right trigger button do usually? So i can try pressing the equivalent button on KB/M.

It's just the regular Shoot/Swing/Throw button for the preset I was using. I just swung my Wrench at it and parried it's attack. It only seems to work specifically for melee attacks, but I'll have to test it further to see if it works for anything else (doubtful, but possible).

I know about that. What happened was even though it's attack was in motion, I still forced it back in that one strike. This has happened multible times, and worked every time i tested it on any mimic that ambushed or attacked me. This doesn't seem to be random.

Hmm, would be pretty cool if this is the case, I'd like to try for myself

Okay. Come back here, and tell us if it works for you too.

I've noticed with shotguns something similar. Normally, point blank wont kill a headcrab. But if it's their surprise jump attack, and I instinctively shoot, I take no dmg, and they die in one shot. Believe I've had it happen with pistol as well.

I gave it a few tries, but I could only find a few mimics in my part of the game.
I can't reliably counter attacks, but in the few occasions that my timing is correct, it knocks the enemy back if I hit them first.
I don't think it's an intentional parry system, I think it's just that we hit them first.

Don't know about parry, but did notice an 'execution' style attack sometimes.

Those are neat, I wonder if there's a reliable way to trigger those?

Dunno if there's a reliable way to trigger it, but I thing it is reliant on range and where the enemy is facing relative to you.

There isn't a specific animation for it, it's just the result that I had to go off of. You might be right, but I just think it'd be nice for there to be a little more depth to what you can do with melee (especially seeing as how it has it's own perk branch).

if you charge your wrench you will for the majority cases be able to knock down an enemy. I use it all the time against phantoms. They can easily be killed without using a single power or shot because of that.
