They are, however *radically different* in play style, even if they're both set in very much the same location / world / with as much detail between them. One deeply rewards careful, slow, explorative caution. the other... kind of does not encourage it even though you'll *need* to do that. Mooncrash is amazing for breaking your habits... or at least getting around them.
That could mean you've played like 5% of it, or 20%, depending on play style. Again I'd just say: it's worth your while to finish the first game at least once, to get an idea of what the whole thing actually IS, and then dive into Mooncrash for its headlong-rush-into-scary.
Wait what? I've been playing MC lately and hate always having to go to the main game and then out again from its menu. I don't see MC in my library (though i clearly own it). How does one launch it directly?
Weird, maybe it's something to do with the edition you got. I got the complete edition, whatever it's called, and when I go to the ordinary Prey entry it gives me a startup screen that lets me go to Prey or MC.
