Anyway to remove the Red shadow on text???
Purchased this awhile ago and only just got round to playing it. So far I haven't done a damn thing. First book I clicked, yuck, looked screwed so I exited and reloaded. Checked drivers, restarted PC, verified cache. No problems. Yet every book I click the text is all screwy with a red shadow.

So far I haven't seen a fix as it seems like an intentional.........feature. My eyes really don't like it. I have glasses to correct my mild double vision but trying to read the text in game feels like I trying to read a book without my glasses on in real life :csgogun::steamsad:

Since I've had it over 2 weeks I can't refund it.

Has anyone found a way to make it easier to read stuff?

Will I miss crucial parts of the game if I ignore/don't read all the double vision red text?

Post a screenshot. What you are probably talking is the red and blue doubling hue around the text, which is just chromatic aberration. And that an art choice. If it's bright red, then yes, something weird is going on. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromatic_aberration

You won't miss the main parts of the story, but you will miss almost everything else. Not to say you can't enjoy it. I also wear glasses when playing video games or doing almost anything else.

Looks like the Chromatic aberration and it only effects the text nothing else. Did some reading and yes it seems like an intentional art choice..

My double vision worsens during the day needing me to switch the Fresnel stick on prisms I have for my glasses. Seeing double while trying to read = me immediately changing prism which is fiddly. Now I know it isn't my eyes I won't be doing that again.

ven knowing the Art choice I can't read the test as I'm used to compensating for my mild oscillopsia, involuntary eye movement that causes my every thing I see to move slightly left to right then jumps back to the left position before repeating. No glasses or solution can fix that :( I'm used to it but having spent years getting used to it. I just can't read doubled text when it's slowly drifting left an right at the same time.

Can't find a way to disable the Chomatic aberration. I did find that if I manually change the colour settings on my monitor so red is <10 the red text disappears. Rest of the game looks rather bland though but at least I can read :steamhappy:

Thanks

I would suggest contacting Arkane directly on their official forum about this kind of thing. While the condition you've got is likely pretty rare, maybe there is something that they could suggest in terms of tweaking, or even development to counteract such things. They're good people, and it can't hurt to send them info about it!

Thx Zekiran. I didn't even think of that, just submitted a ticket. Would be nice if they can provide a way to access/disable the chromatic abbrevation.

I just changed the colours settings so red is 0 in 1 of my monitors 3 quick switch profiles. I usually have 1 for desktop/windows stuff. Other 2 profiles for games. I can hit the puck to swtich to profile 3 (no red) for reading and then back to 2 to conitue playing ot 1 when I quit. Will just change profile back to normal once I'm done with Prey unless the ticket finds a permenant solution.

Shocking how much easier it is to think of possible work arounds after I've slept :)

I haven't tried it yet, but when I was searching for mods on nexusmods, I noticed that the 'Real Lights plus Ultra Graphics Mod' had a 'Chromatic aberration toggle' listed as one of the things it adds.

I am sorry to hear that. Chromatic Aberration is only present in Texts and when you take heavy damage for a split second. Some games use it through the whole game on the edges of your screen, like Bloodborne. SOMA also has some heavy CA effects.

I'm having issues with this text/font style as well. It hurts my eyes and makes reading a real labor and fatiguing. I wish they did not go with this idea. For such a great game this is a horrible decision. I hope someone can make a text mod or that Arkane would come out with an option for clear text.

I contacted Arkane. It was a design choice and nothing they can do.....It's now just taking up space. I may try playing in the future by struggling withthe reading or just not read anything with this effect and miss lots content. Though right now I don't see either happening. Reminds me to check games more throughly before purchasing during sales.

Most people don't like downloading random mods to do things like this.

Sorry I hadn't read anything since I posted in post #4 until reading post #7 yesterday. So a delayed thanks. Have the Mod bookmarked and will give it a go when I decide to try Prey out next time.

Tried the mod, did not help unfortunately. The the effect itself is much more apparent on my main monitor (BenQ Zowie XL2411) than my no name crap second one. Potato looking picture comparing: https://i.imgur.com/QZIyGbX.jpg

That's really too bad, it's a good game if you could actually play it.

I'm not sure if this will help, but I seemed to have had luck turning the black stabilizer down on my monitor. When it was low or off I stopped seeing the it. Hope that helps

Tried the mod. Didn't solve anything for me.
However, I did find that my monitor's refresh rate made the difference: At 144hz, my default refresh rate, the red shadow is obvious and annoying. At anything less (tried 60, 90, and mine is now at 120hz) the red is hardly visible even when you're looking for it. I can see why others don't think it's a big deal, since many of them probably have their refresh rates lower than 144hz and therefore can hardly see it.

Long story short: change your monitor's refresh rate to less than 144hz. Problem solved.
