I have a serious ammo problem
So, I'm doing my first playthrough, on hard difficulty. And even though I think I'm doing everything I can to economize resources (take and recycle everything, even the things that are too big to take when I use a recycling charge, make my own ammo and avoid spending minerals on other stuff, set up ambushes, use explosive tanks, lure enemies into turrets, use neuromods for resource economy (weapon upgrades, security, recycling, hacking, combat focus), using the type of weapon enemies are weak to, wrenching anything that is not plain suicidal to wrench, trying to use the shotgun point-blank, etc), I'm running out of ammo like no tomorrow. There's just too many enemies with too much health.

I am trying to clear the rooms out of enemies to be able to explore and read everything, but now I'm on deep storage, with no ammo, and thanks to the damn technopaths I can't even use the turrets.

I am doing something extremely wrong, or is it just not possible to do an all-human playthrough on hard without just ignoring enemies?

I played on the hardest and was doing the no upgrade achivement at the same time. Didn't have problems for most of the game even tho I had to do multiple runs to recyclers because of the limited inventory. But in the final stages I had to just run past enemies.

Well, if you are at deep storage you should be starting to get medium level Typhon Combat Abilities..... like Kinetic Blast, the Fire and Electric Blasts... those would allow you to use Psi Hypos as "ammo" for a bit while you rebuild your stash.... you can get upgraded Wrench Neuromods to make melee easier.... I usually had some spare resources so I could print up a few clips of 9mm or buckshot. Also- you said you are already doing it but whenever i found turrets I'd set up killzones OR just bring the thing with me and drop it every room or two.

My usual cycle is- Early I'm VERY low on ammo but I'm accumulating resources. Eventually I've got a pile of resources that i only use for neuromods and for emergency ammo. By the time i start getting offensive Typhon Abilities I've got a pile of Psy Hypos.... but I upgrade both medical kit and psy hypo effectiveness so that I can ration them better. I actually am running it on Nightmare with a mod to make things a bit tougher, so the advice I'm giving here should be effective on lower difficulties as well. In my current playthrough I just got into GUTS for the first time and I had to blow all my ammo on a Weaver, but I always make sure to have enough resources for a few prints of ammo AND with my Hypo stash I should be able to plow through to the next fabricator. If I remember correctly you should get a blueprint for turrets in the near future which could help out a bit.

Are you currently low on resources? If so- I'd consider backtracking to some earlier places and scavenging for some goodies. You should have higher athletic abilties/strength/hacking/etc to open up new areas in places you have already been and there are likely entire areas you have not even been to that are open. Also, it can be risky, but remember you can go OUTSIDE the station. You'll be able to find some goodies out there, too. Feel free to ask any questions or get more specific- I LOVE this game and can probably help in more specific ways if you need it.

Okay, so first thing you want to do is get Psychoshock and Kenetic Blast (typhon abilities). Then, go to Life Support, find the Psi Particle Injector, and install it into the Talos 1 water supply. Now, every drink of water from every water source throughout the station will give you 50 psi power. IE, you now have infinite ammo. Upgrade your psi pool as well, and use the chipset that gives you +50 psi pool.

You'll end up with 300 psi pool, strong psi abilities, and infinite ammo for it. And hypothetically if you're in a spot with no water source, you can use a psi hypo and regain a lot of psi power. Just make sure to upgrade your psi-consuming abilities so you get the most amount of psi power back from each psi hypo. You'll end up accumulating more psi hypos than you use as long as you drink water instead of using the psi hypos when you can.

That should solve your ammo problem- I don't use ANY shotgun shells or 9mm bullets anymore. No reason to. Psychoshock III is much more powerful and I have infinite ammo for it. Kenetic blast III is powerful as well, but psychoshock is better IMO. Also I am able to kill every enemy around me instead of hiding/sneaking past them.

If you still need/want more resources, get Phantom Genesis (I or II), and resurrect every corpse you find and kill them again- the loot will reset. One body doesn't have a ton of loot, but I resurrect and kill every corpse I find, and that's how I get all my resources now. I currently have over 100 of every material, and over 200 exotic material. You'll also get recycler charges, psi hypos, occasionally neuromods, TONS of ammo, etc.

Just modify your gameplay as I mentioned above, and you won't have any material problems, including ammo problems. The main thing is just to get the psi particle injector into the water supply so you have infinite psi abilities, and then having good typhon psi abilities to take the place of any human weapons you'd use.

Wait... All human playthrough? Yeah man you're SOL. I would suggest finding a mod that increases the amount of material you get with the recycler charges, and then stack a bunch of big objects (leverage III type objects) together and recycler charge them. You should get at least 2 mineral material and 1 synthetic material, so you can make another recycler charge and do it again.

I missed the all-human playthrough part too. Ok.....even with that limitation I think you should be able to find enough stuff to recycle for ammo if you explore everywhere.... there are places that you don't really have to go, or if you DO have to go you don't need to go there until way later and you can find goodies there.... the Shuttle Bay, the Bridge.... and with your upgraded abilities it's great to backtrack. There is a closed off area in the Lobby blocked by Tier 3 Weight items.... you can get Super Strength or just throw a recycler at it. If I was going all-human I'd definately upgrade my wrench abilities. Does increased strength make you do more wrench damage? Oh- something fun I've been doing is using my new super-strength to throw stuff at Typhons. A tier-2 desk or chair will kill a mimic with one shot and do considerable damage on a base Phantom. I'm not saying you'll be able to get through every fight just by chucking stuff.... but a surprise attack on a Thermal Phantom with a chucked reployer will save you a clip of 9mm or several shotgun blasts. That can add up.

I'm confused. Combat Focus + stun gun/ Gloo gun + Any Weapon = Overkill

If your doing an all Human run you should focus on maximizing the damage and clip capacity of 1 weapon at a time. Take the first rank of combat focus. Break down PSI Hypos and make nullwave transmitters for the harder Typhon fights.

Weapons to upgrade first:

-Shotgun
-Stun gun
-Q-beam

I don't get these people saying you're screwed when doing all human, I did all human and I was fine for most of the game. Rather than listening to people telling you what's good and forcing yourself to use those things, figure out what you like and stick with that rather than spreading your upgrades and resources around.

Examples from my non-meta all human playthrough (I played back in december without reading any community stuff about the game):
  • Gloo gun - Was used a lot in the beginning (in tandem with the wrench), less so as the game went on and my need to disable enemies before shooting them went down.
  • Pistol - Reserved for when using the shotgun would have been wasteful (long range, those annoying halo flood bulbs, the occasional disguised mimic, etc.)
  • Shotgun - Was my bae. Top priority for upgrades, top priority for ammo fabrication. Usally tried to keep my stored shells at 2-3 stacks as often as I could afford to.
  • Grenades - Never really used them till late game. At that point it was just EMP against the techno typhoid things, and sometimes recyclers on the little halo flood hives. Broke down a fair number of them to put towards shotgun ammo instead.
  • Stun gun - Kept a stack on me at all times, anything over that got recycled. Might have stocked a little more during parts in the late game when there were more operators to shoot, but generally say limited use.
  • Q-beam - I legit almost never used it the entire game. There were a couple times I pulled it out for fun / to see what the hype was all about, but I can't imagine I put it to serious use more than like 3 times to shoot an enemy down. 90% of the ammo I got for it was recycled and used for the shotgun.
  • Armor repair kits - Anything over 1 stack got recycled.

tl;dr - instead of trying to use everything, use only a couple specific things that you really like, and turn all the excess from the things you don't like into fuel for the things you want to use extensively.

I didn't use the Q-Beam much either my first run. I didn't like how it didn't do damage but rather caused heat until the enemy exploded- so it was an all-or-nothing weapon. I'm using it this playthrough and am thinking that if i upgrade it a bunch it might melt enemies like butter. I lean on Typhon Offensive Abilities a lot though... so it would be interesting to do an all-human run.

Depends on how your using ammo. I do human only runs and have plenty of ammo and resources at the end.

If you collect all ammo, materials, and recycle everything then yeah it's probably how you're using the ammo.

I usally open with the stun gun for all enimies (except for mimics) and then finish with another weapon.

Shotgun should be used once per Phantom then finish with the wrench. Twice if a special Phantom, then switch to the pistol.

Q Beam after stun gun for Weavers, Technopaths, and Telepaths.

Full powered Stun Gun for Operators, and Technopaths.

Run for Nightmares or Combat Focus and maxed Shotgun.

Game is not balanced like a traditional shooter, but you still can play it that way for the most part if you really know what youre doing. To play more effectively, make your shots count. Use gloo and wrench when possible. Point blank shotgun from behind. Shoot environmental hazards like O2 tanks and flame pipes. Figure out how to best apply all weapons so you dont use up all youre ammo on one.

Human-only is easy enough to do combat (in fact, I think it is actually easier than the typhon abilities).
Biggest things to help conserve ammo:
  • Grab the sneak attack upgrades, and then sneak attack as much as possible. With upgraded pistol and sneak attack, you can easily one-shot standard mimics.
  • Environmental stuff. Turrets are a great way to save ammo when available (definitely get the upgrade that lets you increase their durability), and if you can manage it throwing stuff can deal significant damage
  • Combat focus. Sure, it makes the combat itself easier, but the big win is comboing it with sneak! Sneak attack point-blank shotgun blasts do insane amounts of damage (one-shot standard phantoms, or very close to it)
  • Combos. Gloo increases the damage you deal, and I think stun might as well
  • Use the huntress boltcaster to fight cysts. I see a lot of people waste insane amounts of resources on cysts. Cysts chase and attack (self-destruct) movement, so firing a boltcaster bolt at them will cause them to attack it. You can even then pick up the bolt afterwards (assuming you can find it)

Technopaths are incredibly annoying, since their electric attack will disable the stun gun (which will be your big damage dealer and opener). This is another case where combat focus saves you though: Combat focus to have some extra time to approach, zap them with the stun gun, then wail on them with the wrench (or if you can afford it, keep zapping).

Unless they play a major role in how you fight, I'd also recommend recycling the nullwave and typhon lure grenades, as well as most of the psi hypos you encounter. The sooner you get more neuromods, the sooner things become a cakewalk.

Strangely enough, hack can save you a large amount of resources as well. Use operators to heal whenever possible (usually requires hacking the dispenser) to save on medikits/suit repair kits/psi hypos. Rather than trying to kill corrupt operators, just make them vulnerable (sneak, gloo, stun) and hack them to make them friendly. The same applies to turrets, but remember that if a technopath is still around it will take control of the turret even if you have hacked it.

How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does
