I also like the story of Prey more because it wasn't as easy to see through as it was in Bioshock. Same goes for the setting. It is Space > Underwater for me.
But still, I love me some Bioshock. I prefer Bioshock 2, though. Specially with the Minervas Den DLC. Great stories.
But I still I prefer Prey because of it's overall tone and more deusex/systemshock esqe approach to the setting and world building, Bioshock is more theatrical and emotional, Prey is more casual and pseudorealistic, Bioshock tries to tell an epic story, Prey is just a distressed space station with a bunch of dead people who had their normal everyday lives before the outbreak which is more interesting for me to explore. And I like science fiction more than just retro porn with some fantastic elements.
Although I don't think that attempt at retrofuturistic aesthetics in Prey really worked, it failed to create a distinct style for me and felt like a cheapy Bioshock knockoff and placeholder civil aesthetics to contrast with more industrial and scientific zones of the station. The main font is very Bioshocky looking and it really catches the eye, I think a neutral, normal looking font like simplistic arial would have worked better in Prey setting. I liked the Patrick Nagel's style looking artworks but there were also ones that looked banal, like from a generic anticonsummeristic cyberpunk or totalitarian dystopia fiction.
The gameworld here is a lot more "comfortable," easier to manouver in and interact with. I've tried BioShock 1-3, and I hated ALL of them.
EDIT: I changed my mind. In the first ten minutes of the game, I encountered THREE unacceptable things:
1. Every time I use an elevator, my character gets stuck when it reaches its destination.
2. Dr. Bellamy asked me to hide in a room where there ISN'T any place to hide.
3. Dr. Bellamy asked me to press a blue button that doesn't exist.
This game SUCKS—way worse than ANY of the BioShock games. DO NOT BUY. You WILL be sorry.
You'll found out later why you can't hide, I won't spoil it to you. At the beginning of the game you are supposed to "fail" the tests because you don't have any typhoon neuromod installed
All of which are plot points or a result of your poor eyesight. Try playing better?
System Shock was more of an RPG shooter where Bioshock was more streamlined to be just a shooter with special powers and a neat story. Prey is more focused on where System Shock 2 was going with ability upgrades and survival horror. Personally, I wouldn't really compare Prey to Bioshock directly due to difference in focus. I would say, however, that Prey is more worthy of being a spiritual successor to the System Shock series than Bioshock.
I don't think Prey was retrofuturistic. It just had Art Deco.
