Xbox Controller not working.

Someone who may know how this works, please help! I bought the game recently, but it will not recognise the xbox controller I've been using to play all my other games. I've tried disabling the Steam controller settings both in Big Picture, and in the properties menu of this game from my library. I didn't think it would be an issue at all, for the store page said there was "full controller support", or something to that effect, and every other game that I play with a controller usually automatically detects it without an issue. If anyone has any advice, I would really appreciate it.

I also have the exact same problem after buying Prey yesterday. It will not recognize my controller on ANY setting. I am so effing sick of buying these Steam games only to find out that either they don't launch at all, they have some bizarre glitch in them that prevents it working correctly or controller support doesn't work when it says it should. TOO MANY STEAM GAMES ARE NON-FUNCTIONAL!!! Is that why they go on sale so cheap? This will be the LAST WASTE OF MY MONEY ON THESE SH*T GAMES, I've had enough of this garbage. EFF STEAM.

I completely understand how you feel, fitzhugh61, but I am fairly certain that Valve will refund the games for you if they are not working as expected. Unfortunately, this does not solve the issues with the controller, but it is at least a silver lining. I'm planning to open a ticket with Bethesda on their website, so I will update this post with any revelations I learn from that course of action.

In the Big Picture Mode settings, go to Controller Settings and see if Xbox Configuration Support is checked on. If not, turn it on, and then restart Steam. Click on Prey in Big Picture Mode, scroll down to Manage Game, and select Controller Configuration. It should look like this:

If not, press X, and then select the correct configuration for your controller.
In my experience, Prey works well with virtually any controller I throw at it (including the DS4), with rumble for all controllers, and the button hints (press A to jump for example) updating automatically in the game with my correct configuration when I modify the button mapping.

I believe Prey now has an official option to use Xinput instead of SteamInput, so this mod isn't needed unless you want DS4 button prompts without using SteamInput.

I don't know if anyone is having this problem but I just turned off the steam controller input in Prey and my xbox 360 controller started working fine after a restart.

Aha! I finally got it to work. Making sure that "Steam Controller Support" was turned to "off" from the in-game settings, and a quick restart seems to have worked. I hope other people are aided by this.

Right Klick on the Game -> Options and than set "Use BPM Overley when Steam Input is Active Per-Game settings" to forced off - and set Ingame Steam Controller support off

I find it more comfortable to play games with a controller. In games like this where precision isn't really needed, I don't see a point in hunching over a table so I can use a keyboard and mouse.

make sure you have in Steam, Settings -> Controller -> GENERAL CONTROLLER SETTING -> Xbox Configuration Support - Enabled
