Prey

Prey Crashing my computer?
So, I play a large variety of games. However, Prey is single handedly able to crash my computer. At first I was able to play a limitless amount of time without issue. However, recently, Iapproaching the 12 hour mark of play time and the crashes are becoming frequent where my computer completely powers down.

This doesn't happen when running 4 clients of Eve Online, or when playing League of Legends, SC2 or PUBG. Just Prey.

halp?

This sounds more like a hardware issue. Check your temps. Also, your power supply might be dying.

Either your CPU/GPU overheats and shuts down the system or power supply can't handle certain peak power load.

Like inane says, it does sound like the motherboard cpu temp shutdown threshold was reached.

If its shutting down fully, then its that, psu, motherboard issue, or an application is shutting it down. Not many things will actually shutdown a computer.

Actually, I will rephrase that, not many normal things will shutdown a computer, because if you spill soda on it, or pull the power cable, etc then I'm sure that it will shutdown lol.
BSOD, faulty drivers, viruses, malware can all cause shutdowns

Thankfully, its none of the above as far as I can tell.

In the effort of troubleshooting this is what I have done.

Updated all drivers on all devices.
Ran Malware Bytes.
Ran CCleaner
Check the integrity of the memory through command prompt.
Cleaned all the fans on all parts of the computer.
Ran a scan on the hard drive to ensure nothing was corrupted.
Checked file integrity of Prey itself

during the last crash I was literally just running in circles watching my Corsair Link to monitor temps and fan speeds. Everything was well within safe operating temps and speeds when it crashed.

My current thought is that maybe its an issue with the power supply since its the only thing I can't test. I'm just confused as it is literally only during playing Prey that my computer will fail and shut off.

I had simillar issue in the past when my pc turned off while playing certain games. It was shutting down like your machine. PSU was at fault.

What I can reccomend you to do is to run some stress test like AIda 64 along with Furmark. If it shuts down then is 99% chance that is PSU.

I've already ordered a replacement PSU because I ain't wasting time risking my GPU/HDD getting corrupted from a crash and I'm just gonna not play Prey till it arrives.

If it still persists past then, I'll retag y'all and keep brain storming I guess x.x

check the windows event viewer? might be a game or system related crash event that might help narrow the problem.

Do you have GeForce Experience? Try uninstalling that and see if it helps, turns out GE is having a lot of issues lately and crashing people's computer and hard freezing them lately.

What are your specs? If you have a nvidia card try installing precision xoc (older cards) from steam or precision x1 and enable osd (on screen display) and monitor your hardware. It could be thermal paste problem or tons of other stuff. Gathering information should help.

It could just be a bug in the game, etc... also.

If you have a geforce card maybe try the geforce game experience recommended settings.

None of the games you listed have high hardware requirements. Prey doesn't really seem to need much but it's more than mmo games.

Buying a new psu seems a bit premature?

Find your crash dump folder and see if windows stored any reports in there, it usually does so when the system crashes, you can open the reports using Notepad.

located C:\Windows\memory.dmp

That's not as uncommon as you may think, I'm glad you solved it.:)

BTW: I highly recommend D5 pump from EK. It is basically best pump money can buy.
