Prey

I accidentally deleted my save file...plz help me
I was playing Prey for 19 hours in hard level, and I almost reached the end of the whole game.

A moment ago, I started Prey via Steam, and tap the enter button to get in the game.

At the moment, my friend texted me , so my eyes were heading for my phone instead loading Prey.

While I'm reading the text, I noticed that BGM (that should't be playing when loading game) is still playing.

So I looked up the monitor, then there was the screen with the 3 empty playing slots.

So I wonder

1. I only tapped the enter button. why my save files were gone?

2. In this situation, how can i retrive my save files?
(from steam cloud, file recover program, whatever)

I tried Recuva on C -> User -> Username -> Saved game folder, got nothing...Q.Q

PLZ HELP ME

I DONT WANT TO PLAY 19 HOURS MORE ....

Steam usually backups your save files and places them back into the save folder once game is reinsltalled. Maybe you could try deleting and installing the game all over again to exploit that mechanism.

But what if Steam backed the game after the save file has been deleted...?

I tried that with undertale. Deleted my save and after I reinstalled the game it loaded my supposedly deleted save. So in my eyes it should be a viable solution. In any case: what does OP loses? It's not like he will lose any more save files by doing that.

Steam does not backup save files that are saved into your SavedGames folder. Never ever seen that...ever.

Only backup steam does is cloud sync.

So no, steam does not "usually" backup your saves.

Play 19 more... Maybe now you learn to backup your stuff?

Your only option is to try an spam cloud sync. It's probably too late now, but immediately exiting steam, so it can't sync your changes, then reopening the game might've worked.

It does it on this game. I went travelling this weekend, took my laptop. Played some prey and all of my saves from my home rig were available to me. Cos they were in the cloud.

Then I got home, went back to my home rig, and my new saves from the laptop session were available there too. Which is cool.

Yep you are correct. I went to Mexico and played on my laptop. When I came back I was able to continue where I left off on my desktop including all the old saves I had.

Nope it doesn't. What it does is makes your cloud saves available. That is quite different to backing up saves in your saved games folder (although your save files available will be the same if you had cloud saves turned on when saving then exiting the game). You can use a different PC/Laptop and of course it will download your saves that are on the cloud, but as said, that's quite different to physically backing up your saved games folder saves

Not all games use cloud saves, for example Dark Souls. So be wary not to rely on cloud saves for all games (you can easily check if a game has cloud saves available by right clicking on the game/properties/updates. As you will see, you can disable cloud saves right there. It also tells you how much space you have available on the cloud.

there is an "old" command like "undelete" in cmd. if there was no traffic in the place where the files were there is a 99.99999% chance of recovery. windows is lazy to delete the whole thing it just marks that place as empty..or search for it in the recycle bin :D

There are also programs, some free, to recover deleted files. The less you use the disk after losing the files, the better the chance of recovery.
