DXDGI ERROR RESET ....WTF is going on?
I'm using a GTX 970 gpu with 4 gigs of Ram so why is this game crashing every hour? i get a black screen then the game crashes and I get this error warning saying my driver is wrong ( which I updated today an hour ago ) or my GPU is overheating...What is this? How do I fix it. This game is not that graphically challenging.

Can anyone help me? Has anyone else had this issue, I've just started playing the game , I got 3 hours in it and it's crashed on me 3 times.

I checked the DXDIAG and it says I'm using DirectX 11

What OS do you have? Win 7? Make a clean install with DDU and check out the fans and the temperature of your card.

This game requires minimum 8 gb of ram.

^ I'm pretty sure he was referring to the 4 GB of video RAM in his 970.

Windows 10, I assume?
Might have to try lowering the settings some. Does Prey have a DX 12 option? If so, try that? (if using Win 10)
I don't know, because I just bought the game the other day and haven't installed it yet. Just decided to check the forum here and found this thread.

I also found this, if it helps any:

I've got 32 gigs of Ram and I'm using Windows 7 professional.
Overclocking? If you've got a lot of hours on your 970 it may be starting to fail, needs new paste or just needs a good cleaning. Dust and heat are the number one enemies of computers.

no , not even a year old and I dusted my entire 'puter less than a week ago. It's this game. If it was just me , then I might buy that but it's not. I've even read online when I was researching a solution, that a guy with a 1070 ...(that's right a 1070 )...had the same thing happen to him. My 970 comes out of the box overclocked. I downloaded OC GURU from GIgabyte and the clock is the same as when it came out of the box but there is no way I'm messing with it over one game when every other game I play , and I've got hundreds of them, work just fine. By a simple common sense process of deduction , it doesn't take a genius to realize it's not the GPU, meaning that , if more than 20 other games currently work, why go to such an extreme as messing with a 400+ dollar component that is central to the entire system because of one game? Even if I had a dozen other Graphics cards in unopened boxes laying all over the house I still wouldn't do that. I'm not saying your suggestion doesn't have merit , just that from my perspective I have a clearer view point of this particular situation. I do appreciate the suggestion never the less. Not to mention the fact that relatively speaking PREY is a 'new' game , it comes out of Arkane Studios who messed up Dishonored 2 so it's not all that far fetched to make the assumption that it's more than likely, based on my current circumstances, that it's their fault. ( putting new thermal paste on my GPU? I would not do that. It means taking it apart and that is just not necessary.) Overclocking on a gpu should not affect this game. It should not cause a DX reset. I highly suspect that , this being based on the CryEngine, that the programming is the problem but just not for everyone.

I just checked the CFG file in my saved games folder for Prey and the FPS was set to 144. So I changed it to 60. This might be the problem right here. I also just discovered that the Nexus has mods for Prey. What's weird is I had Vsync checked. I hope it helps someone else having this problem. I hope it helps me too. lol

Good luck, let us know. I'm running 2x970s@144hz (144fps) with no problems.

Whoa...I could not play at that high a frame rate. lol...it would light my pc on fire....lmao..It appears that was the problem , the frame rate was too high. I've been playing for about an hour and a half with no problems. 60 is as high as I can go.
