Should I explore the GUTS?
So I just went through the maintenance shafts to get to the Aboretum, which I thought were the GUTS until I realized the actual GUTS weren't until the end.

Story goes into the Aboretum, but should I bother wandering into the GUTS now or will story take me there later? (I already found Josh Dalton)

Also I have some sidequests that are in earlier areas (such as the josh dalton one), I'm gonna end up back on the other side eventually right? Or should I go back and finish those older ones now?

The game is designed to let you roam wherever you want. I'm close to finishing the game, and have yet to have any broken quests due to my not visiting the locations "in order." For instance, if a quest needs you go to location A, then location B, but you go to location B first and finish the quest ahead of time, it WON'T cause a problem. In one instance, the NPC even says you finished the quest before he even asked you to as if you could read his mind!

But one strange thing I've noticed is that if location A has a bunch of emails and notes you are supposed to get, but you go to location B first and finish the quest, the emails and notes suddenly appear in your inventory anyway!

I get that, but I just finished going through those long maintenance shafts and I don't really wanna delve into what seems like an endless GUTS tunnel.

My question was moreso: will the game put more story quests in the GUTS, and if not is there any compelling reason to venture into them otherwise?

There are indeed some side quests in the GUTS. But there are side quests pretty much everywhere. The motivation for doing side quests is always getting better loot and supplies. Not to mention, there are a bunch of missing persons you are supposed to find with the security terminals. And some of those missing people are inside the GUTS. In a game like this, you are always encouraged to roam everywhere and anywhere, at least to familiarize yourself of the place so you can get around more easily.

There's nothing much in the GUTS itself. I assume you've explored the Psychotronics to cargo tunnel. There' a good quantity of hidden junk floating around, but apart from Dalton and a small side quest involving unblocking a certain area, there's nothing much. If you go the opposite direction you can explore Fuel Storage, part of the Cargo Bay, Life support and part of the Reactor early on in the game, but you'll visit these areas later on anyway.

No, you will not be sent to GUTS again. Nonetheless, there is a small quest found at its very end, reactivating the cargo bay connections. You are free to explore GUTS, but you are not forced to visit every nook and cranny of the station. Actually you get to see only about half, if you are not exploring.
