The Whole Deal with the Prey (2017) vs Prey 2 (with a bit of Prey 2006)

So on this forum there has been alot of arguing over this game and bethesda.

Many people are annoyed (including myself) over the cancellation of Prey 2. I'm going to write about the situation and clear some facts up but this case their is alot of he said, she said. I'll pretty start off with the development of Prey 1 and work my way forward to summarise to this current point. I'll throw my opnion in towards the end and explain why people are mad.

Prey 2006

Prey 1 was a victim of development hell its self it went through many iterations before it was released in 2006. While it did shift from studio to studio many design choices stayed the same e.g. Portals, aliens, native american protagonist etc


Alot of games which go into development hell come out as ♥♥♥♥ but according to the reception this game was not one of them

"Prey has a Metacritic average of 83 and 79 on the PC and Xbox 360, respectively"

due to the postive reception and a commercial success work began on a sequel.

Prey 2

Prey 2 went through a few iterations as well but lets just start from 2009

• Zenimax acquires the rights to the Prey I.P.
  
  
• Human Head Studios Developer of the final 2006 build of Prey start work on Prey 2
  
  
• Prey 2 gets officialy announced in march 2011
  
  Prey 2 Appears at e3 2011 and receives numerous awards and nominations. Soon after e3 and gamescom is where things get bad.

  So in a nut shell Bethesda wanted to acquire Human Head but when they said no Bethesda got mad and started bleeding them dry. Pretty much a large publisher bulleying a smaller development studio to be Bought out. Bethesda would deny this bescause thats what people and companies do especially in the gaming industry.

• At e3 2016 Prey was revealed
  
  Prey is said to not be a sequel or reboot and has no relation to the orginal what so ever. Its reimaging of the ip. so in other words its completly seperate and just uses the name Prey.
  
  

  Why are people mad?

  
  We are mad because we wont get to play a badass bounty hunter parkour set in a universe which had interesting characters and was a sequel in the best possible way because it greatly looked to improve and innovate from the original which is something many games these days fail to do.
  
  Tommy was a great character. he was different and very well developed.
  
  I hope that we will one day say a spiritual successor to Prey 2 or even a proper sequel with a different name?

  So for now we have Prey 2017 Which is completly fine as a game it looks ok some people seem to like what they have seen others dont but we wont truely know if its any good until it releases but everyone is entitled to their own opinion as first impressions are always important.I hope that we will one day play a spiritual successor to Prey 2 or even a proper sequel with a different name? We know why you guys are mad. Even if I personally am not invested in the idea of Prey 2 as much as you guys (I thought the demo looked lackluster) I completely understand why.

Here's the thing, though: Prey 2 is dead. It's over. There's nothing you can do about it. Unless Bethesda somehow miraculously goes bankrupt and someone buys the Prey IP there is absolutely nothing anyone can do about it.
Why is that important? Because some people are idiots and come here to ♥♥♥♥ over everyone else's party. We're here because we like the new Prey, or maybe we don't, either way, we want to talk about it without having new threads and derailments about a game that will never exist pop up all the time. Stop talking about it everywhere, stick to one thread and stay there. Better yet, ♥♥♥♥ off to the Human Head forums and get them to make another Rune game instead of shovelware garbage.

(This isn't aimed at you NiBy) Get over it, seriously. Being obnoxious about it does nothing to help your cause, it only serves to antagonize others and provide an avenue to troll you. Consider whether you really should cut off your nose just to spite the face.

But SOME chucklef~uck chose to not put it in the Steam Store.

If you played it you know Art Bell was in the game.

PC Gamer post that clickbait article about the old Prey 2 and now everybody *miss* it even though they didn't know it existed before. If you ask me, Arkane should have named this game something else than Prey, it has nothing to do with it anyway and they would have saved themselves the headache.

yea i agree even rebooting/reimagining ip's after one entry is stupid. Prey (2017) didnt sell well from what ive been seeing. Who knows if another entry will happen. I think they should rename Prey (2006) to another ip and continue with that because that actually established a universe and a story worth exploring, it had originality and i think the game was ahead of its time. Prey 2 (cancelled) was aswell

Which portal, took the concept and went further with. As cool as some moments they are used, they function no different then warp points. I imagine they wanted to go further with it but the game had been in development to long at that point.

Everygame takes concepts and goes further with them. The cancelled sequel had may original ideas for its time obviously as the years have gone by people will look back and go "i understand why they cancellled this it looks the same as any other game" well back in 2011 things were different. Prey (2017) to me just looks like system shock with prop hunt

Well I would imagine prey 2017 is as thats the game they were making. Since there aren't many games like System Shock it brought a good deal of freshness. But since it's niche not everyone will like it. Thing is when I look at prey just seems like a HD version of Turok with none of the challenge or enemy variety. For its time it was solid shooter nothing. More as cool as prey 2 was, since no one has we can assume it could have been good or bad. But honestly prey 2 did have less in common with the 2006 version.

my opinion I didn't totally like the released human head studios footage one bit. I'd never have bought that. The first thought I had on that was oh hey another game like the wolfenstein series. Everything turns into this dumb overexaggerated childish action shooter stuff. I'm from the old generation who likes mystery in combination with realism. Exactly what the reimaged prey delivered. For me the prey game (2017) is the best game that has been made in the last decade of gaming.
