Prey 2017 Installs To Same Directory As Old Prey
I've just noticed that this new 2017 Prey's default installation directory is exactly the same as the old 3D Realms Prey from 2006.

If you, like me, had a copy of the original 2006 Prey installed in your Steam library and installed the new 2017 Prey to it's default location, you will now have 2 games installed in the same Prey root directory!

How did the developers/Steam/Valve miss that? Now I have two different games files all jumbled up together in one folder!

Does it cause any problems though? I mean to run both games?

No, suprisingly, both games run fine. Fortunately, the original Prey has a very simple file/folder structure, as it's based on the ID's tech, where everything except the games executable and .cfg files are housed in one "Base" folder.

Still it's stupid they didn't make a different folder.

Agreed. I'm amazed they didn't consider this. The original Prey is no longer avaiable on Steam (for some wierd reason) but there are still plenty of people who converted their retail keys to Steam like I did.

To be fair, none of that is a problem on ZeniMax or Arkane's end. That is the fault of steam not having a method to switch it.

Strange the devs didn't catch that but cool that both games still work.

Side note, I had a lot of fun playing the original Prey. Loved how they had (Art Bell radio show) Coast to Coast radio broadcasts throughout the ship, with random callers on the radio show talking about the events you were experiencing.
You ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ what?

That could well be true, although I for one don't know who in the chain is ultimately responsible for designating what the default install directory's name would be. You would think Steam would have a database of all "taken" install directory names to avoid this.

I guess it is unusual to have two games with the exact same name on Steam. The only other one that springs to mind is Doom. The original Shadow Warrior and the Shadow Warrior remake avoid this error becuase the the original gets installed to "Shadow Warrior Classic".

Have had the same except on different drives.. But like said above does not matter. The files do not interact on any level. Its just storage

I can think of two potential issues this causes: Steam Backup and File Verification.

Does Steam backup select ALL files contained in the install directory, or does it backup select files according to some list or database?

Also, if you run File Verification, does it remove any unknown files in the directory that were NOT installed by the respective game? If I run File Verification on Prey 2017, would it remove all the original Prey 2006 files?

Have both games installed so far no issues I am crazy running verify on both titles at the same time lets see if it breaks

All validated .. think you are safe

It looks like Steam Backup copies and compress all files in the designated folder, so backing up either game will back up BOTH game files into one archive.

I agree that both games work fine, so as such, this is not a "game breaking" problem but it is almost certainly an oversight on someone's behalf. There is no way they would deliberately do this....it's just seems a bit flaky, as this might have caused issues.

What possible reason is there for you to make that assumption?
