No it is a gradually opening world where eventually you will open more and more areas that you can backtrack to. It is not open world where you can do whatever you want whenever you want. You will need to upgrade yourself and suit etc etc in order to progress throughout the station.

This is a first person metroidvania game. Meaning you have full access to the game based on skills and items. It is just the manner in which you aquire said skills and items that determines your path. The game encourages backtracking. Sadly some of the backtracking feels meh but thems the breaks. To do otherwise would make a player too powerful too soon based on that right first skill/etc.

Metroidvania is best descriptor. Definitely not "sandbox", and "open world" has too many interpretations.

It's like Bioshock or Dues Ex. The areas are small and you can go back and explore them further with new abilities that will allow you to go to places that you couldn't previously reach.

So technically, it's "open world", but I wouldn't call it that.
