Not really a story spoiler at all, since it says it right in the... Status menu, I think it's called?
Either way, the one that spells out in text just what those little status-effect symbols actually mean. That menu.
Anyway, it means you've dipped too heavily into the alien neuro-mods, and the security systems are tagging you as a typhoon.[/spoilers] It's basically the main trade-off for doing that.
It's a mechanic that's easily missed, though, so can't really blame you for feeling confused about it.
I also just realized there is a tiny light on top of the turrets that indicates wether they are friendly or not.
