RPG vs. Undead RTS - How does RTS mode win?

I've been playing RPG mode vs. an RTS mode friend, and I'm honestly not sure how my friend is supposed to win.

He's an Undead player, and I've played a variety of different heroes against him. But I find that generally his spam is easy for me to kill, and the only unit he's been marginally successful with is Vampires - which I can still kill with the right spell setups. And most games, if played right, shouldn't last that long if an RPG player wants to win.

A good example is the Arena map. We played a match there where I don't think it even lasted 10 minutes. I was on the Dwarf Ranger, and he on Undead. I quickly killed some monsters, bought a goblin camp and a gnoll camp, then started raiding my friend. Heroes do lots of damage vs. buildings, but moreover, I simply cast an AoE DoT whenever he managed to get minions up in my face, and they melted. Once I'd gotten rid of some of those necromancers and his defenses, the gnolls and goblins came flooding in, and we made short work of the base.

If I let the game drag on instead, spells like Hurricane and Tremor just destroy his base, no question. And Tremor in particular is really rude because it seems to permanently remove resource nodes from the map. I cast it on a few of my friend's mines, and he wound up having to concede due to no longer having access to those resources.

I know other races - the elves, for instance, with a proper druid/archer combo to snare a hero and then murder it - can fare well enough against RPG players if they get their armies cranking out in time. But the undead player doesn't seem to have as much of an answer. They get vampires, which are strong, and they get dracoliches, but these aren't perfect answers. The vampires can be smitten with a couple spell casts by a leveled up hero, and the dracolich's shots can be avoided pretty easily... and it can be 2 shot with the pretty holy light type spell you can get from libraries sometimes.

What advice do you have? How can I help the RTS player develop a means of dealing with me? Are the undead just a bad choice for fighting RPG players? Are RPG players too strong?
