The boardgame is generally intended for everybody to be in the same room, but there are several ways to overcome that. There is an excellent mod for Tabletop Simulator for Mansions of Madness, for example, which even includes a way to play this app inside a tablet within the simulator.
I've also successfully played this and other cooperative boardgames via zoom and other video conferencing apps.
How do you play the game usnig the Tablet on TTS ? I haven't been able to get it to work (have to use my Tablet at home. Also video conferencing apps are not cheap.
There is a stack of manuals toward the top of the table. It includes the official game manuals, but also some tip documents. One (looks like a sheet of notepaper) is: "How to get the Mansions of Madness App to work in Table Top Simulator so all can see." It involves using join.me, which is a free screen sharing meeting tool that can be viewed through a browser on the TTS tablet.
Unless you're talking about paying for bandwidth, I'm not sure what you mean. Plenty of free options. I've used both Zoom and Discord for playing games over video, and haven't paid a penny.
Good luck, and if you find something to replace join.me that works for you, please share.
